There's several things (like the explanation for where the First Order came from as well as some bits of Finn's, Rey's, and Poe's backstories) that really only show up in some of the recent "new canon" books. I believe there's some details in the novelization too that don't show up on the screen (dunno, I haven't been able to get far into it, the writing is kind of meh in my opinion) too. So like...if you haven't read that stuff, there are definitely things that are missing.

Plus it still bugs me that they destroy the "Hosnian system" in the movie. We've never heard of a Hosnian system before. We've never seen it. We know nothing about it and we seen about ten seconds of it in the movie just before everyone dies. Last we saw, Coruscant was the capital of the Republic. So what the heck is this "Hosnian" place? It really cut a lot of the drama from the testing of Starkiller Base, I think.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie, but I'm with you on hoping there's some deleted scenes/extended bits.
