Ugh, yeah, it's the worst trope. There are very few times when it's actually justified, imo.

I always found it weird on Buffy when they had that trope with Joyce. I was actually kind of with her when she said in season three she couldn't believe Giles never told her. You really should tell someone's mother that they're out slaying vampires. (If they're fifteen years old, anyway, which Buffy was in the first season.)

I think they do it mostly just to get that family member out of the way, and avoid having to actually deal with it (and with the chance they would become the voice of reason or actually support the hero emotionally in their time of need, and thus lessen the drama). That, and it's so much easier to have the "oooh hideeeeee" drama than actually having the characters communicate.

...you know, I'm suddenly realizing that in one of my stories I had a mini-plotline that was sort of like that, where the villain shows up at one of the heroes' houses and wacky hijinks and they don't tell the family and all. I AM RETHINKING THIS PLOTLINE.

This. Slayers appear to be taken away from their families most of the time. Buffy was different because Giles treated her differently and recognized that she was someone who needed attachments to function. But for a while he still followed what he had been taught because he didn't know better, and Buffy was protective of her mom and also didn't want to be stopped from slaying.
