Based on those images I am 100% convinced anime will never be inclusive or accepting of women. Western comics and cartoon are slowly growing into the 21st century way of thinking, but I really don't believe anime ever will.

Thank fuck.

Based Japan.

I assume you haven't seen any of these shows? Utena, NGE, Cowboy Bebop and GITS at least have incredibly cool & memorable female characters. Not sure about the rest though.

NGE: The show where the main character, the fucking hero, sexually assaults a girl in a coma? This isn't the on;y skeevy thing I remember, but it's a pretty fucking biggie.

GITS, the show built on fetishization, sexbots, and unnecessary nudity? Plus goreporn against womens bodies?

No, they're super fucking progressive and welcoming to women.

Ah you're one of those people who think any portrayal of sexual assault in fiction is inherently glorifying sexual assault.

I don't know much about GITS beyond the movie in OP's post. But as a woman viewer I enjoyed the hell out of Motoko's character in that movie, nudity and all. The part where she hulks out trying to open a hatch is badass.

That said yes, sexism in Japanese culture is def a problem but these shows are SO not the examples you should be using.

NGE sexualized the hell out of all its female characters. It was quite obnoxious.

So basically you stopped watching after the first episode, that's cool. Sailor Moon, Noir, and Utena are in that image, so I know you're just having a giggle, but still.

There are lots of anime and manga aimed at women, young girls and little girls (you have dozens of manga magazines for women, compare it to the number of Western comics aimed at women) plus erotic and pornographic anime and manga for women.

what

inclusive? accepting? dude, watch more anime, or at least a studio ghibli film.

I mean you're probably a troll, but in all fairness I do think a lot of anime unnecessarily sexualizes female characters but there's also a ridiculous amount of mainstream stuff that never even comes close to that, and still features female leads.

It's pretty obvious you don't watch anime, so why are you speaking bull?

Check out Shirobako, an anime about how anime is made. Wide variety of female characters, all awesome in their own ways. Sexism is also called out and shut down on several occasions.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-24 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, the entire female cast of Shirobako have moe pretty designs while many of the male characters are fat or ugly. It's definitely a skewed aesthetic. There's not a single ugly girl in the show, despite the fact that it's supposed to include a bunch of women who are otaku and socially awkward, they all have perfect hair and makeup and clothes.
