Overpowered characters

(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
So, let's talk about OPd, God-Mode characters. What character pissed you off the most in their excessive Super Special Awesomeness? Is there any character you like in spite of being practically a demi-god, or that you think the excessive power was actually explained enough where it felt reasonably appropriate for the story?

Particularly talking about protagonists here, but if the trend has ever annoyed you within a side character or antagonist, do tell!

For me it is less superpowered characters that bother me and more always right characters. If they have a lot of powers but can be wrong and make mistakes and have weaknesses, I'm fine with it.

On the other hand you have characters like Richard Rahl in the Sword of Truth powers who is not only overpowered but is always right even when he's really really wrong. And the author sets things up so the other characters have to practically worship him so they aren't vulnerable to the main bad guy.

Uuuuuuggghhh, Richard Rahl.
Those books were loaned to me by a teacher, which made my eventual opinion of them a little awkward...

I hated Richard. He regularly went from being bland and boring to me actively judging and despising him for his choices. He was OP'd and super awesome and moral (even though they weren't always imo), and all the women ere in love with him. That series was just a trainwreck.

Sword of Truth legitimately went far, far off the rails. I quit before it got horrible, but I've heard stories *shudder*.

I don't care how much this is blasphemy to the Dragonball fandom but...

Son. Goku.

Oh my god I can just bitch about him and his excessive "Super Special Awesome Speshul Snowflake Hero" power. @n@

Re: Overpowered characters

(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I like Goku's personality, but I can't freaking stand how he's the hero all the damn time. I'm still pissed about the way things went down in Resurrection F.

I don't think it gets any worse than literally any incarnation of Wanda Maximoff. Her powers are whatever the plot needs them to be. Don't question it!!!

I don't mind super powered characters. I don't like characters who ALWAYS get that little bit of whatever they need to beat the increasingly powerful bad guys each season (see BTVS and SPN).

Superman can annoy me sometimes with how nothing can beat him but a lot of that is down to the writers rather than it being the character's fault in general, Batman can suffer from the same problem at times too because 'he's Batman' so he can't loose.

Saitama from One Punch Man though I really like and his overpowered-ness is part of the fun for him but I think it's because it's played for laughs most of the time.

Matthew Mantrell, of the Wizard in Rhyme books. Constantly knocking off evil dictators left and right, because of course! God couldn't have picked anyone else to do it in the preceeding few centuries! All those people had to suffer until the right dramatic moment for God's Chosen PhD Student to save them!

I really only like OP'd characters if they are either punished because of their abilities or recognized as morally questionable. In protagonists, they'd need to have an equally powerful antagonist who can still dominate and humiliate them. Basically, I need to feel that the series creators are not creaming themselves over their OP demi-god self-insert, but are critically using their cast of players. Generally, I like all protagonists to have to face consequences at some point or another and I need them to be flawed.

My favorite OP'd character is Death Note's protagonist, Light Yagami. He was absurdly OP'd. Insanely intelligent to the point where he makes adults look like infants, he was absolutely beautiful and everyone was in love with him. But that's purposefully how the dynamic was created. Obviously, Light's actions are in-canon supposed to be extremely questionable if not villainous, and he's such a force to be reckoned with because he's so terrifyingly capable. He also had a great antagonist in L, who was just as capable and ruthless. So, Light being OP never felt obnoxious to me, it felt like it was at the core of the story.

And it made the ending really satisfying.

I think I have seen overpowered characters done well. But it's a matter of opinion, isn't it?

I thought of Marvel's "Ultragirl" series from...back in the 1990's sometime? I really liked it, but taking it apart, I can see how a lot of readers would despise it as pretty standard overpowered-hero formula. I think it worked for me because of how it used the setting and pre-established concepts.

Ichigo from Bleach. I do like him as a character, but he's freaking everything and it makes it hard to enjoy Bleach 'cause you know he's gonna swoop in and save the day.

Re: Overpowered characters

(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
I agree Ichigo has too many powers, but I find it excusable with the 'soul suicide' explanation Urahara gave. He needs all of them to survive like the other Visoreds, he just has everything in greater degrees.

I'll have to disagree about him swooping in and saving the day. I mean, obviously he's going to win at the end, but he usually gets his ass-kicked along the way and has help.

Re: Overpowered characters

(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's a good thing I liked his personality because there was no way I was going to put up with that as long as I did otherwise.

I'm gonna be the one to say Star Wars Rey. Unless she is given a really good backstory explaining her powers, then the fact that she instantly is good at the Force and can beat Kylo is super OP'd. Oh yeah, and is better at the Millennium Falcon than Han Solo.

Re: Overpowered characters

She "beat" Kylo by taking him by surprise. Plus, she had first hand experience shown to her with Kylo trying to "read" her mind. Also, she knew about the Jedi and the Force growing up, even if she thought it was myth. Ergo, she had some knowledge of how the Force probably worked. Plus, Maz Kanata and her advice.

And she wasn't better at the Falcon. She has a computer that she has used for years that she specifically makes simulations for and it covers ships from super small shit to Corellian Freighters.

You people who keep harping on this...rewatch the movie. It spells things out quite well for the limited time it had to show that shit.

FUCKING KVOTHE. No character has ever enraged me as much as he does. He might not be the worst objectively, but gdi.

Re: Overpowered characters

(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god Kvothe, forgot about him. My teenage brother loves the shit out of those books - fair enough, they are basically an adolescent male power fantasy self-insert. I'm not even hating on the story itself, there was some interesting stuff there, but overall it felt like a Kvothe wank fest by the author. Does he have to be good at absolutely EVERYTHING?

Jade Curtiss. I did get amusement from his character being kind of the worst in the game as far as gameplay goes though.

Yuri Lowell, who is the opposite of Jade in that in the story he is a reasonably experienced swordsman, but gameplay wise he's just good at everything, even stuff the others would logically outdo him, without any explanation.

Naruto. I got to the point where I hated him in canon, enough I don't think I'll ever reread the end of the shinobi war. Literally everyone is deeply, world changingly moved by his speeches and he never loses.
