A Mary Sue can be any gender, because it's all about a character who warps the world around them.

Depending on how they're written they can even be canon characters.

I agree with this. However, I think it's disingenuous to suggest that fanfic Mary Sues aren't more commonly female.

When it comes to original fiction I think Marty Stues are just as common as Mary Sues, so I'm not saying that self-insert characters are a female thing. However, because such an overwhelming majority of fanfic is written by women, and because female writers are more likely to write their self-insert characters as female, most fandoms end up with a lot more Mary Sues than Marty Stues.

Also there's the fact that in most canons, there's no need for Marty Stus. The protagonist is already a dudely power fantasy.
