Well, at least you're keeping it to yourself. Good on you for letting your friend have her fun.

And I now have the urge to write a bunch of OC fanfics.

Thanks for the inspiration OP!

Just don't post them in the main tags in sites, plz

I swear I'm not radfem!anon, but since you brought it up... its a little weird that you only hate FEMALE ocs. Is there a reason you don't mind male ocs?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not the secret OP, but I very rarely ever see male OCs as main characters. Random side characters (the barista at Starbucks, doctor at the hospital, taxi driver, random guy on the airplane, things like that), but only very rarely do I ever see a male OC as a main character, or shipped with a canon character.

Female OCs, on the other hand, tend to show up for shipping or to be a major part of the plot, and I dislike it when there's an OC in the main part of the plot. For that reason, I dislike female OCs more often than male OCs, because most male OCs I see play very minor parts in the story.

That said, I don't mind female OCs that are minor background characters, either.

The secret itself actually answers this, though it is phrased a little confusingly. OP hates female OCs because she is allergic to Mary Sues (right there with you, OP). Presumably she is also allergic to Marty Stues, but since the VAST majority of fanfic writers are female, one ends up running into a hell of a lot more female OCs who are Mary Sues than their male counterparts.

Ugh keep that "everyone should write fic MY way" shit to yourself.

No one likes a fanfic dictator.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-16 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
not all OCs are Mary Sues, though.

A Mary Sue can be any gender, because it's all about a character who warps the world around them.

Depending on how they're written they can even be canon characters.

this reminds me of a post I saw on tumblr the other day about people who preferred to follow canon and how they were to be pitied because they were still "shackled" to canon and lacked the enlightenment to go beyond the story confines where everything could be improved upon, or something. it had the same condescension that this secret has, only in the opposite direction.

Grow the fuck up, OP.

The canon doesn't belong to you, in any way whatsoever. And unless you feel the same way about male OCs, you better believe I'm calling misogynist reasons.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I'm ok with OCs popping up in fics. Sometimes you need them to move things along. But if people feel the need to specifically point them out, I'm less inclined to read. I expect a certain amount of original characters to be mixed in with the canon, but don't list them in the character list man!

'Doesn't belong in YOUR canon'? Yikes. You sound like a delight.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I can't not agree with you there.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Would it be acceptable if I wrote a male OC who was the new star of the fic and got the attention of all the main characters and saved the day, oh mistress of canon?

That is all. I have nothing new to add since the last time we got one of those secrets.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like them much either, but it's best to let your friend do their own thing. I can always scroll and leave people to their fun.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Time to write swathes of utterly self-indulgent Mary-Sue OCs and spam them all over popular tags ♥

MAYBE POE AND FINN BOTH NEED NEW GIRLFRIENDS ♥ ♥

You know, I once hated OCs and mary sues too, I used to loved reading all the sporking and fanfic school fics. Now I think they can be very pretentious and condescending (and a bit of homophobia) and not that good either. Fandom is a hobby, and hobby means you enjoy doing it. If people are having fun, especially young people, let them have it. Give them constructive criticism if they want and call out them out if they are being obnoxious and awful, otherwise just let people do what they want.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
I think such anti-OC attitudes are pretty silly, especially because it's throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Why on earth would anyone want to limit a writer's creativity? Sure, there's always the potential to screw it up and write a terrible character and/or fic, but... so? Why should that stop anyone from trying?

I write a lot of female OCs. Hmm, they need to talk to the clerk at the store to get information to move the plot along, lets make her a lady. I need a bystander, also a lady. Calling tech support, lets make her a lady too. Random scientist? Lady. Criminal robbing the bank? Lady.

There's no reason Random Side Characters #1-17 need to keep the proper 60-100% male thing going on.

And while I prefer not to read Canon Character/OC romance fic, eeh, I'd certainly never shit all over the people who do like it. So what if they do? Doesn't hurt me any.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
I don't mind OCs, female or otherwise, as long as they're either villains or minor characters who are needed to move the plot along. But if they're a main character and/or a love interest, I don't want to read it.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 09:37 am (UTC)(link)
For what it's worth, OP, I absolutely loathe self-insert characters myself. Mary Sues, Gary Sues, whatever, I just cannot stand them. I think the way you phrased your secret was pretty provocative, and my opinion is, let the writers of Mary Sues have their fun. I also think you're conflating female OCs with Mary Sues, which isn't fair because I've read a fair few well-written female OCs who weren't Mary Sues.

But still, I empathize with your hatred of Mary Sues.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
If I see a fic that's tagged $PROTAGONIST/OFC, I generally keep scrolling.

But you know what? I absolutely support fan writers in their desire to write their fics, and post them for the other fans of $PROTAGONIST/OFC to read. People are allowed to like the things I don't.
