(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)The author's ability to write a character is what's the issue. Writing established characters seems to be a lot easier than making your own for a lot of people so it makes for good practice.
It's 'safe' and wholly embraced in fanfiction to write the canon characters. The fact that people already have an attachment to the established canon characters offers a sort of protection. In my experience most people tend not to call it out as much, or even see it as such, if their favorite character is written a bit Sueishly, unless it's in the most excessive measures.
People see OCs as a warning sign and automatically prepare themselves to suspect the OC of 'sueishness'.
So you can have an OC paired with a secondary character, and many people will be calling foul. because they're the newcomer that many readers are trained to distrust. But a canon character can snag three lovers, save the day, unlock hidden powers, fulfill an ancient prophecy and/or inherit some mysterious fortune before people are really questioning it. Because they have a connection to that character and see no problem with them being extra awesome.
