I think that back in the day we would get series via filtered stuff. Nowdays we get everything that comes out, so it's obvious we'd get the good things along with the crap.

This is exactly it, I think. I didn't appreciate how much Western networks filtered anime back when I was growing up until I ditched cable in favor of finding stuff online. My "watched" and "recommended" lists almost exactly match the shows aired on [adult swim] after I stopped watching, but I had to slog through so much bullshit to narrow it down, instead of having great stuff served up directly. I almost miss really believing that anime was 90% amazing with some sketchy crap on the side, instead of the other way around.
