Does Pikachu count as a full character? I mean it has a personality sure, but it doesn't really have a full characterization in that it can't talk and probably isn't capable of complex or abstract thought.

Ummm...out of curiosity, how much of the show have you seen?

I mean, just out of the first season I'd point you to "Ash Catches a Pokemon" and "Island of the Giant Pokemon" to 100% disprove this.

Same, lol. It basically exists as advertisement for Pokemon games and toys. Since there's no reason to stop releasing Pokemon games and toys (not like the games are really about plot, the same formula can be rehashed indefinitely if you add a few fresh features and a hundred new Pokemon) there's no reason ever they would stop the anime.

I play all the games, I am not a Gen One elitist. But after Gen 1 I get fuzzy on the names and by gen 4 I don't know any of them.

I only played Gen1 until I played XY when they came out, and I don't think I successfully learned a single new Pokemon's name. The "ENEMY TRAINER IS ABOUT TO SEND OUT SO-AND-SO WILL YOU CHANGE POKEMON?!" feature was so useless.

I gotta say I'm kind of disappointed that ever seen Best Wishes, Ash and Team Rocket don't seem to have as much of a little underlying *wink wink nudge nudge ok we're enemies and we'll totally kick your ass sometime but anyway always nice seeing you guys hope you're doing well!* vibe that used to pop out a lot in the earlier seasons when they weren't in direct conflict. XY has brought it back some, but TR isn't nearly as likable or nutty about their flair and costumes and shit as they used to be (and they're not competent like they were in BW either).

I actually seriously believe that the reason Team Rocket is so incompetent is because they have some sort of psychological block that makes them sabotage themselves, because they don't actually really WANT to win. Successfully stealing Pikachu and beating Ash would mean the whole driving force of their lives would be gone and they would be reassigned to a new mission that might be a lot more evil and unpleasant than stalking a little boy across the world and having tons of fun dressing up, showing off, and sneaking around in the process. And as much as they talk themselves up as being evil, and even though Jessie and Meowth have mean streaks, they're really not very bad people at all and probably would hate being genuinely evil for long.

Plus I'm pretty sure there was an episode that all but confirmed that they really like Ash and enjoy being around him even though they're in denial about it?

The episodes where Team Rocket teams up with Ash and his friends are some of my favorite episodes ever.

Same with episodes where Team Rocket is having some kind of crisis or problem and the main group puts their feud aside for a while to help them.

And those moments, like in movie 2 and 3, where Team Rocket rescue Ash or help him save the day and are all like WELL UM UH THERE WOULDN'T BE A SHOW WITHOUT YOU I-I-IT'S NOT LIKE WE ACTUALLY LIKE YOU OR ANYTHING NOPE.
