I agree. I mean, from the start, I wondered how they could possibly make a successful Hobbit movie because I feel the plot is too episodic and not climactic enough to suit epic Hollywood tastes. It just doesn't lend itself to a movie well. I actually was excited to hear they'd be adding Appendix stuff and altering some stuff for that exact reason. But in the end, they basically made every worst possible choice. It was unnecessarily long, ridiculously boring and all the original dialogue was painful as fuck.

Though, I don't think they actually did badly at the box office. They must have made money, surely? So Silmarillion might also come some day... though I'm not sure how that would make a successful movie, either.

...Sure. I mean, the one thing that really stands out to me about the storytelling is the immediate momentum of the new relationships and the narrative suspense of wondering how they will come together and/or reunite and/or fill or break out of certain expected molds, combined with the easily accessible older characters tying into that in a way that doesn't feel too indulgent. And those things rely a lot on the chemistry of the characters whose rushed relationships would have really sank the story, I think, if they weren't believable, as well as the previous investment in the old characters, etc. IMO it could have been as much of an awkwardly uninspired rehash as Star Trek Into Darkness was without those elements and without a lot more investment in fine-tuning whether the nostalgia is being balanced with anything fresh, but that doesn't mean I thought that balance was perfect, as much as I love the idea of the story being cyclical in subtle ways.

Oh wow a secret about David Eddings... I still re-read my copies once in a while. I think his treatment of female characters is mostly dated, but yeah... they were all pretty much the same person. The Mallorean was just kinda bad though.

This is a pretty picture. The guy in front looks creepy, but I kinda like that. Is that skull armour of some sort?

(All these Sengoku Basara secrets are going to make me watch the darn thing! To be honest I've been avoiding it mainly because I think I'll really like it. It seems to have lots of ready-made slash pairings, and from what I see of it it's exactly the kind of crazy I'm into...I just don't have the money/time to get into a new series right now. D:)

People who have watched this, is this a decent series? I really like the artwork and fanart I see, and it's suprised the hell out of me that a bunch of bara dudes have become an obsession with the tumblr crowd who usually go for waify yaoi boys. But I can't really glean much of the plot. (Oh, and this is important I guess, is it as easy to slash as the fandom makes it seem?)
