What did you like about Tauriel, honestly? I wanted to like her, but her character was almost pure filler. She had potential, but it was never fulfilled.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
I liked the way she played off of/clashed with Legolas, and highlighted what a gigantic douche he was being.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure that really came through for me, at least not as an intentional message. The film clearly meant to romanticize that aspect of the love triangle, not to highlight any negative behavior on Legolas' part. It also seemed like a waste of time, because it should've been a movie about Bilbo, the dwarves, and their quest, not about lovesick elves.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's not exactly like the book so it sucks" god you people are fuckin dumb.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
And you're annoying. AYRT didn't say anything about the books. The MOVIE is called The HOBBIT. It's set up in the beginning as Bilbo's tale. All the film criticism (from people who haven't read the book but know film) centers on how the side-stories are what slowed the film down and made it such a fucking mess.

Derailing every legitimate criticism into a book vs movie only makes it look like you don't actually have an argument to defend the movies.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't need an argument to "defend" the movies because I don't have to defend what I like. Go back to Tumblr, slut.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
No one says you need to defend that you like it. But you are participating in a debate about the merits of characters/the film. AYRT doesn't agree with your stance. That's fine. You don't have to agree or engage. But you did engage, so it's fair to say your side of the debate has no standing as all you can do is throw tantrums.

Also, name calling - another classic derailing ploy by those who cannot argue intelligently. I think you're the one who's been spending too much time on tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Every disagreement is a debate to you? How the fuck do you function outside the internet?

There is no debate. I like the films. I don't have to defend why. Piss off.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Not every one. This one is though. You said:

"It's not exactly like the book so it sucks" god you people are fuckin dumb.

That is what I am responding to. If you'd actually just disagreed, then I'd have no issue. But, I am very tired of seeing every discourse about Tauriel immediately devolve into this, especially when the person who does not like Tauriel hasn't actually brought the book up. You can actually dislike her on grounds other than she's an addition.

I'm enjoying this so I'll keep going.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really give two shits why you don't like her, though? I do. You're not gonna change my mind. This isn't a debate no matter how much your stupid ass wishes otherwise.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not trying to change your mind about liking her. I don't care if you do or don't.

However, you immediately dismissed all reason for hating her as being because she's not in the book. This argument bugs me. If I could change your mind on anything, it would be to not use this argument again (although I'm sure I am just reinforcing to you to keep using it as you seem irritated with me, but hopefully I am illustrating to others reading this thread that immediately using this argument will result in long winded arguments about her flaws because in order to refute your assertion that I hate her because she's not in the book, I need to illustrate moments in the film to prove that that is not the case).

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Because I don't care about your argument since this isn't a debate. What are you, five?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like we are discussing two different issues here. Clearly, you are feeling attacked for liking Tauriel. I did not mean to make you feel that way, though I understand why you do. I'm sorry if that's the case. However, it is important to me that a statement like this:

"It's not exactly like the book so it sucks" god you people are fuckin dumb.

be refuted when it is called for, as I feel it does in this case.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
So you're an attention whore overly invested in internet arguments then. lol

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, well played troll! You've got me.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not what I said, though. I don't expect movie adaptations to be exactly like the books. That wouldn't be realistic, because film is a different medium and changes are needed to make the story work. Taking issue with the very poorly done love triangle and poorly done original character is hardly the same thing as being a book purist.

Let me emphasize it, since you seem to be jumping to conclusions: I don't object to Tauriel or an original character in the movies. I object to the fact that she wasn't very well executed as a character. I wish they would've given her a more meaningful role in the plot, otherwise it seems like a waste of a good character.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't care you're still fuckin dumb. Piss off.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, this just highlights one of my problems with her. Legolas should not be a douche. They basically performed character assassination on him and Thranduil in service of Tauriel's character. I wouldn't be tempted to call her a Mary Sue if her presence hadn't warped the personalities of those around her so severely.

And, it didn't even do anything. They kept saying that whatever they were going to do with Tauriel would impact Legolas and set him up for where he's at in LOTR. Which, 1) means her arc is in service of his and has no weigh in itself, 2) didn't actually happen. Legolas leaves in a pout. When we see him next, he's levelheaded in the Rivendell meeting in LOTR. He's mostly calm and collected in the LOTR movies. The characterization from Hobbit to LOTR doesn't make any sense, and it's clearly done to highlight how special Tauriel is.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Legolas was a douche even in the books. Your boner for Orlando Bloom won't change that.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't think you actually read the books and I'm beginning to think you're a troll. Your hate-boner for Legolas is showing.

Legolas was not a douche in the books. He showed concerned about the hobbits. He threw one temper tantrum in Lorien but then quickly became BFFs with Gimli. He wasn't stingy in his praise of Gimli or anyone else. He would sing at the drop of a hat and tease Gandalf. If you want to say there's not much to his character, fair enough. But he was not a douche.

(And, not that you'll believe it, not actually an Orlando Bloom fan.)

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
lol no, been reading these books every year or two for over two decades. Legolas was a fucking asshole.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, troll.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay Orlando Bloom fanslut.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Either you're a troll, or you have serious issues with reading comprehension. Or perhaps both.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Go home, Bloomslut.
