(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 01:47 am (UTC)(link)The Silmarillion is a fantastic tale. The book's style might be dry but what's going on in it is anything but. If someone could make a good adaption, the visuals and the epic story and amazing characters would make LOTR pale in comparison. And there's a wide range of tales to tell, from the utterly tragic grim-dark of Turin to the epic adventure of Luthien and Beren to the triumph of the War of Wrath. There's so much good stuff in there that it makes sense people would really want to see it adapted for the big screen.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)Derailing every legitimate criticism into a book vs movie only makes it look like you don't actually have an argument to defend the movies.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)Let me emphasize it, since you seem to be jumping to conclusions: I don't object to Tauriel or an original character in the movies. I object to the fact that she wasn't very well executed as a character. I wish they would've given her a more meaningful role in the plot, otherwise it seems like a waste of a good character.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)And, it didn't even do anything. They kept saying that whatever they were going to do with Tauriel would impact Legolas and set him up for where he's at in LOTR. Which, 1) means her arc is in service of his and has no weigh in itself, 2) didn't actually happen. Legolas leaves in a pout. When we see him next, he's levelheaded in the Rivendell meeting in LOTR. He's mostly calm and collected in the LOTR movies. The characterization from Hobbit to LOTR doesn't make any sense, and it's clearly done to highlight how special Tauriel is.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)Legolas was not a douche in the books. He showed concerned about the hobbits. He threw one temper tantrum in Lorien but then quickly became BFFs with Gimli. He wasn't stingy in his praise of Gimli or anyone else. He would sing at the drop of a hat and tease Gandalf. If you want to say there's not much to his character, fair enough. But he was not a douche.
(And, not that you'll believe it, not actually an Orlando Bloom fan.)

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)But her character is a travesty. If you honestly like her character, I feel like you should be upset by what they did to her. Did you notice how in the third film all her kick-ass ability just disappears? Both Legolas and Kili (her romantic interests) come to save her. Bolg's death was owed to her.
That's just ONE example of MANY of why her character is terrible, and why many people don't like her.
Other characters who aren't in the book are well loved (Sigrid, Tilda). If a character is done well, only the hardest of hardcore fans will object. But, Tauriel was not well done. She gets earned hate because she COULD have been great but she was actually terrible. Not just disappointing. TERRIBLE.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)Unfortunately for you, you're not policing my thoughts or anyone else's. That seems to piss you off lots.
