I posted my thoughts in the comments, and the author admitted she was nervous about doing this and I'd hit on some of her biggest worries. I wound up reassuring her and telling her to have more confidence. At least for the moment, I'll see where this is going.

(The character I'm most worried about now is actually the archer. She could very easily fit into Christian-fiction stereotypes of angry misotheists who think God has personally slighted them. Still, it's way too early to guess what her arc will ultimately be.)

I think I replied to you but not sure if you saw it. If Lyra is turned into that I will be very sad, for both your reasoning and some spoiler character not plot reasons.
