This is how I feel. Two would have allowed time to let us care for the characters and given us some of the stuff from the expanded material that was important (the White Council was important and I think it was important to show us what exactly Gandalf got up to, especially given that it connects to the later movies). But we wouldn't have gotten all the unnecessary additions like Tauriel or Legolas (who I would have been fine with just being in Mirkwood because he probably was around, but keep him out of the action and the actual plot) or Alfrid or the too long battle scenes in the last movie.

Yeah, much as I liked Tauriel I wouldn't have said no to her only being in Mirkwood without going any further, along with Legolas. Hell I'd have probably just have Legolas as a cameo rather than a big role, show that he's around for LoTR linking but otherwise keep him out of it.

Alfrid on the other hand needed to be gone completely, why was he given so much screen-time in the last movie? That was truly baffling.
