People who have watched this, is this a decent series? I really like the artwork and fanart I see, and it's suprised the hell out of me that a bunch of bara dudes have become an obsession with the tumblr crowd who usually go for waify yaoi boys. But I can't really glean much of the plot. (Oh, and this is important I guess, is it as easy to slash as the fandom makes it seem?)

In my experience, the plot is really hard to follow, but the over-the-top ridiculousness makes it worth at least checking out. Also, yes, it's very gay.

It's bizarre and OTT in the best way possible.

If you prefer something more serious and with a logical plot, JJBA may not be for you. But if you are open to a truly bizarre adventure, it's worth giving it a chance.

A review from someone less enchanted with it.
I only watched the first few seasons of the anime (I got until Stardust Crusaders, somewhere?), but I never quite got the hype. Maybe it keeps getting better, I don't know.
Its strength is definitely in the style, and in the sheer weirdness of the superpowers the characters have. Everything is way, way, over the top. At the same time, though, I found it to be very shounen tropey. The plot is thin, and basically involves people fighting each other a lot (one on one. with the other characters narrating from the sidelines. and machismo up the wazoo). There are like 1.5 female characters, at least so far, and they don't get to do any fighting, either.
It doesn't shy away from violence, and some of the bits are gorier than you might expect, though I suppose it also depends on whether you get an uncensored version.
It's slashable because all the characters are male, so yes. I mean what else would you do, haha.

You watched the first few seasons and yet somehow missed out on the awesomeness that is Lisa Lisa? o_O

Also if you're that concerned about women in your shonen, read the Stone Ocean arc. It's filled with them.

I don't actually remember a Lisa Lisa.
The truth is, I'm not that fussed about it - I don't usually go to shounen for female representation, but I know there are people for whom it can be a factor, so I mentioned it. I don't know if I'll read/watch as far as Stone Ocean, though, since overall I wasn't overly enthused with the series. But maybe someday :)

So has "bara" just come to mean "any man not specifically a skinny bishie boy" or has it stopped meaning anything at all?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Lol what are you going on about? Being a devoted bara reader myself, these guys definitely fall within pretty classic bara tropes. They're more like what I personally call "Bara-lite", that grey area inhabited by artists like Mentaiko Itto.

But yeah, they're bara as fuck.

It's hard to glean a plot because there's 30 years of JoJo and that spans about 120 years PLUS an alternate continuity caused by one of the parts that ALSO spans 120 years. So a combined couple of centuries and several generations of a family can make for a plot stew. A few of the plots can be summarized as "Fuck vampires."

As for the gay, well... Joseph in Part 2 finds himself married to two men who wear little more than oil and loose panties. This is one of the less gay things to happen. By far.
