Yes, if they're not distinct enough for me to tell them apart by the end, the writers didn't do a good enough job with characterization. I didn't have this problem with The Pacific or Generation Kill.

The one who starts off as a cocky platoon leader and eventually has a nervous breakdown after seeing his friends killed.

To be fair though, I have seen maybe five or six dozen WWII films. Almost none of the characters managed to have personalities that I hadn't seen in ten other things already... which might be no fault of the writers and more of a fault of the industry. Parts even really seemed like clever homages.
Who knows? Don't get me wrong, I still thought it was a good show. Better than The Pacific, even.

If that's what the writers were going for, I can appreciate the kind of storytelling that evokes a sense of chaos and depersonalization of fellow man... but I didn't really get the sense that that's what they meant to do, you know?
Like I said, in TP and GK this was not a problem. The characters were highly distinct.
Not saying I didn't like BoB. It was great. Well produced, incredible cinematography, engaging storyline, good atmosphere... it just sort of failed to make me notice or remember anyone but Winters.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 12:46 am (UTC)(link)Maybe that's why I love it so much - there's so many characters and events packed into those 10 hours that with every rewatch I find something (or someone) new that fascinates me.
I think The Pacific and Gen Kill focuses in on smaller groups of characters, so it's easier to remember them. I don't think they were characterised any better than the BoB ones.

But then, GK was also pretty damn period accurate lol. In every sense of the hurry up and wait atmosphere of modern combat. That in itself probably contributed to ...well, having more time to watch characters just fuck around.
