I was also really excited for this and have been very disappointed. What bugs me the most is how the movies dictate the "look" of Tolkien now. Art depicts "hot" dwarves. Thranduil is ALWAYS drawn with those ugly-ass eyebrows (and it's a crapshoot what kind of characterization you're going to get in a fic with him). Bard is a poor bargeman instead of a guard. All the choices of the movie are now imbedded in the Tolkien fandom. It's clear that PJ has no real sense of this world. The Hobbit has made me look anew on the LOTR films and now I see some huge issues with those (though at least those aren't as consistently cringeworthy as Hobbit).

This film has actually made me glad they're not going to do the Silm. I can only image what they'd do with such epic material, and how they'd fuck it up. There are a few "moments" I'd like to see get a big screen treatment (like seeing some of the battles brought to life, the Two Trees, etc.) but there's so much they'd have to add to the material to make it a workable script and it's clear that PJ and company can't do it. It would be a mess.

Maybe if there was a different creative team. It would be great if the Tolkien films weren't so tied to New Zealand anymore, so they can find locations that suit the story. I've always said a GOT tv series might work, especially if it was done AHS-style. I mean, the movies made so much money that the studios will probably put something else out there at some point. I'm braving for a Hunt for Gollum/young Aragorn film. CT will die eventually and I think if they give his heirs enough money, they'll let the Silm get made. I just hope someone new will get a chance - someone who loves the SIlm paired with someone who can adapt something coldheartedly to make it work in a film.

I agree with most of this. I particularly found your comment on New Zealand interesting. I think New Zealand was the right look for LOTR and Hobbit for the most part. But I don't think it is right for Belariand. I'd think somewhere like Wales or Switzerland would have good places to film Silmarillion scenes.

And while I still love the LOTR movies, there are weaknesses that I never noticed before. I don't think PJ really understood the different cultures he was showing. It wasn't as pronounced in LOTR as in the Hobbit, but it is still there.

I think it's actually flipped for me. New Zealand would've worked better for Beleriand than for Eriador. Eriador is Europe. It's got thousands of years of history. It should be littered with the ruins of previous settlements and roads and quaint English inns. There should be primeval forests like you find in Canada and actual plains for Rohan that don't have volcanic rock sticking out everywhere. Elves were good at reshaping the land. They would've moved stray boulders or broken them up or built around them. The Numenoreans would've continued that trend and they had millennia to do it. There's nothing "pristine" about nature in Eriador. Someone's been there before, and things are going back to nature. Ruins are being reclaimed. But there's still evidence of what came before.

Beleriand was just being settled. There was more open, untouched wilderness. I feel like Angbang would have that volcanic feel and would impact a lot of the world around it. I could see the plains before Angbang having volcanic rock like "Rohan" in the LOTR films. I can see the waters being clearer and unsullied. I feel like it would be more vibrant and colorful in the places where Morgoth's influence does not touch. It still wouldn't be completely New Zealand, but there are parts of Beleriand that I can accept as New Zealandish.

That's a good point about the ruins. Everything looked too new. They should have looked thousands of years old. I think I agree with everything you said. Although the scenery in LOTR was really pretty. But it wasn't quite right. And it all looked new, not as if it had been settled for thousands of years and had ruins of ancient cities.

Anon, it's Angband...

Don't care.

I hope you're not the one who wrote the wall of text because if you cared that much about the movies getting the landscapes right, you should care about getting the name of the main fortress belonging to one of the biggest bads right yourself.

Yes, god this pisses me off. I wish there were more artists who bothered to draw mail not plate for the armours or something else than the pseudo Chinese/Japanese/Korean robes with high collars for the Elves or a blonde Gil-Galad or the women with braids instead of flowing hair. There are so few artists who try to follow the real life mythology/history that inspired Tolkien.

Oh, or Sauron wearing the eye emblem before the Third Age. To be honest though I don't like him having it at all, but eh.
