Rate the HBO war series

Inspired by #6, I feel like watching a war series. Which one is the best? Band of Brothers, Generation Kill or The Pacific?

Band of Brothers. But I am super biased because of love it so much. Then again, I think it is universally considered the best one.

Fantastic characters, production values, and stories.

Band of Brothers, no contest really.

The Pacific has a really REALLY tedious romance subplot that takes a couple of episodes.

Generation Kill is pretty much perfect if you want something that isn't really action packed but still very entertaining and well-written.

Band of Brothers is great if you're looking for action, but it's a little bit predictable in terms of how it plays out.

My personal rankings are Generation Kill > Band of Brothers > The Pacific, but that would vary according to personal taste probably.

BoB for sure. Nothing against Generation Kill as a story, but BoB is also a great story, and I just really love the look of WWII and seeing how different war in the 40s is. It's such a different time.

Band of Brothers. I have seen The Pacific but I'm not sure I'll watch it again. It just wasn't as interesting to me, and I like the way Band of Brothers was put together more. I've only seen a bit of Generation Kill. I've been meaning to watch it properly.

I have not seen Band of Brothers, but for the other two it kinda depends what you like?

Personally, I think Generation Kill is better, but I liked both. The Pacific is a lot like an average war movie (in regards to stlye, character arc, visual, storytelling, etc.), but it is very good at that. Generation Kill is more experimental, and therefore in my opinion better, but also not to everyones taste, and maybe not what you might want?

OP of #6 here. I would definitely say Band Of Brothers (no surprise there). My love for that series knows no bounds. Also, it's REAL slashy, if you're into that sort of thing.

Anyone keeping tabs on the next Hanks/Spielberg/HBO collaboration? I think it's called Masters Of The Air, and it's about WWII fighter pilots.

Well, it depends on what you're looking for really. If you want the one that most accurately portrays its time and place and is probably one of the most realistic depictions of combatants and war it's Generation Kill. The dialouge is pitch perfect, and it hits you right in the moral ambiguity. Band of Brothers is the most popular, and in my experience consistently the most popular with people who've served, because it has the feels and the likeable characters and the period nostalgia. It's not always entirely accurate and on my most recent watchings I sometimes think it veers towards cliche, but it's still incredibly strong and the action scenes are unmatched. The Pacific is the weakest, and I think it's due mainly to its narrative strategy that hops between three almost completely unrelated story lines, but it still had its moments. I think it was willing to go darker than BOB and take more risks which I appreciate, and I loved everything about Sledge's storyline. I spend a pretty good deal of time immersed in all things military, and that's my two cents.

Yeah, Sledge's story was the best part of The Pacific. In fact I made a secret about it a while back. Have you read With The Old Breed? It has to be one of the most readable, empathetic war memoirs ever written.

Yes, I did. It is definitely everything it's cracked up to be. I also read Burgin's book which was pretty good. I've been meaning to read something by Leckie one of these days.
