Re: So Stephen Fry thinks its ok

I find it horrible that an othewrise educated man would not realise the cultural implications of criticising a woman for her appearance. I would think an openly gay man would understand the horror of being publicly belittled like that.

This is why I don't think gay men count as marginalised groups any more. they have all the privilege of their straight counterparts.

Yes they have male privilege. They don't have straight privilege. So yes they are still marginalized. One area of privilege doesn't cancel out an area of oppression.

Yeah, I am sure dozens of women killed themselves over this comment. Oh no, wait. They didn't because it was a stupid joke between friends/colleagues during an awards show.

But I am sure the CULTURAL impact was huge.

*meanwhile halfway across the world* These 12 year old child brides have even more troubles now that some English celeb made a joke to a friend about being dressed like a bag lady. Their 40 year husbands are going to be so mad if they dress terribly.

You find it horrible... that a comedian made a joke.

They do that, you know. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad. But they tend to make jokes often. Almost like it was their job.

At the expense of a womans appearance? This is not on. We don't make jokes about how faggots are weak and feminine any more, because we are more evolved than past generations. Why does he think women are an acceptable target?

You are trying so hard to make people mad at him. It is adorable.

He made a joke about a friend of his. Would you prefer that he have no female friends, so this mistake can be avoided in the future?

Re: So Stephen Fry thinks its ok

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Just that he treats hi female friends with more respect. That's all.

Re: So Stephen Fry thinks its ok

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
For a comedian, I imagine designating a friend the subject of a joke at an awards show is the utmost respect.

Re: So Stephen Fry thinks its ok

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Are the women you know so weak that they can't take jokes between friends??

Re: So Stephen Fry thinks its ok

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Don't you know women aren't capable of having their own feelings that might go against what another women believes? Why, it's practically misogyny to suggest a women might find a joke about her outfit amusing! HDU!

Re: So Stephen Fry thinks its ok

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
No woman, regardless of strength should /have/ to take sexist jokes from anyone.

Re: So Stephen Fry thinks its ok

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
okay, but what does that have to do with friendly banter?

Re: So Stephen Fry thinks its ok

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
You say "Friendly banter" the rest of the educated world calls it what is it. Sexist jokes.

I have a BS in biology from a state university.

I am not offended.

Your argument (such as it is) is clearly invalid.

Only people who went to college are educated now? Like adults who completed high school aren't able to read and inform themselves?

Re: So Stephen Fry thinks its ok

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
So you think that it's OK to attack women's intelligence? This kind of straight up sexist attack is why nobody takes you seriously. Your attempts at being feminist would work so much better if it wasn't blatantly obvious to everyone that you're just a misogynist.

Re: So Stephen Fry thinks its ok

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Since you stressed have to, I will agree. And I will go on to say that any woman should have the right to want to take a joke however she wants to take it. You don't get to decide what every other woman should be offended by. So on behalf of myself, because I don't speak for every other woman, kindly shut the fuck up.

Re: So Stephen Fry thinks its ok

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
If the gay person you're talking about is weak and feminine, then "we" absolutely do make jokes about it. Much like Stephen Fry made jokes about how a specific woman looked.

Comedy is problematic.
