I frickin LOVE the idea of Salazar Slytherin being a Bugs Bunny ish trickster troll rather than a Snape-ish stereotypical cunning villain type. I always figured that the things that turned Slytherins into a bunch of elitist sneaky cutthroat ladder-climbers was that "pure blood" bit, which would, as tine went on, cause Slytherins not to be just resourceful imaginative ambitious people, but basically a bunch of upper-class racist twats who happened to also have a knack for political scheming because they were from old racist families whose goals were to keep purebloods in power rather than having all sorts of varied goals.

It also kind of makes Salazar's whole descent into racist isolationism more nuanced/tragic? Like, you can imagine it happened because of slowlt encroaching paranoia and exremism about persecution and wizards being able to live in peace and preservingtheir culture rather than just being a bigoted dick.

I have honestly summed up Slytherin House as "they want to be the very best like no one ever was" before, so I 100% agree with you that the whole pureblood racism thing was what fucked everything over. (also that's a way more interesting way of looking at Salazar, kind of want to read that fic now)

Someday I am going to actually write out the whole "if HP was a World of Darkness game, here are the Houses complete with drawbacks, advantages, and stereotypes" effortpost that's been living in my head for a few years.

I could easily see Salazar as a guy who used to be fun and crafty and creative and had all sorts of ideas and visions and plans that would dovetail really well with Godric's daring and Rowena's intelligence and knowledge and Helga's hardworkingness, but who got increasingly cynical and suspicious and unbalanced when Real Life kept fucking up his grand visions and goals. Basically his own imagination turning against him.

I think you could maybe imagine that there's a possibility that the other three went through a milder version. If you assumed the sorting hat's songs revealed things about the past chronologically, you could theorize that maybe Gryffindor goes from "brave at heart" to "brave deeds to their name" (from 11 year olds? Really?) Ravenclaw goes from "a ready mind" to "just those whose intelligence is surest" (not terribly open to cultivating kids' potential.) And Hufflepuff goes from "loyal/patient/hardworking" to "the rest" (maybe picking up the slack for her increasingly rigid colleagues?) or something like that. No evidence that that's how things DID go, but it's one way it might have gone?

It's this sort of POV that makes me like fics that explain Salazar's anti-muggle attitude as a result of someone close to him (like his wife) being murdered by muggles. I do think an event like that could be a good reason why a Bugs Bunny trickster would turn paranoid extremist.

Bugs Bunny as Slytherin--so basically if the twins pranked the Sorting Hat. Because they, like Percy, DO have Slytherin traits, and would probably all be great for that House.
