I can see how that would be attractive. I like exploring what characters are thinking and feeling during canon moments. I like meta discussions for the same reason.

The kind of fic that bugs me is the kind that reads more like a transcript of a scene without enough new information included. I've seen this in AUs where the author makes someone a vampire or something but can't seem to figure out how to have everything happen the same as canon up to a point except by replaying certain scenes exactly as they happened in canon without much in the way of character thoughts or the AU angle being at all relevant.
