When I was new to fandom, there was a kind of fanfic that just pretty much recapped an episode or chapter from one of the characters’ POVs. I’m really sad this just disappeared, whenever a scene would just blow my mind or give me "all the feels" those fics helped me cope.

I blame fandom’s new obsession with that everything that gets published has to be "good".

From where I'm standing, fanfic actually doesn't have to be good anymore. If anything, concrit is the new flame review.

I'm sure it depends on the fandom, of course, just saying... I don't see it.

This is hardly a new thing. Writers are often their own worst critics. That's always been a thing.

I remember those fics. I liked them too. The real issue isn't one of quality, it's just that there's not enough new material introduced to make them interesting for a lot of people. It's following a storyline where the reader already knows everything that will happen. Getting a closer look into a character's head doesn't make it worth it for a lot of people.

That doesn't track. The fanfic that I've read that did this were all superficial explorations of how scenes could support the author's ships. Hardly deeply insightful stuff.

I can see how that would be attractive. I like exploring what characters are thinking and feeling during canon moments. I like meta discussions for the same reason.

The kind of fic that bugs me is the kind that reads more like a transcript of a scene without enough new information included. I've seen this in AUs where the author makes someone a vampire or something but can't seem to figure out how to have everything happen the same as canon up to a point except by replaying certain scenes exactly as they happened in canon without much in the way of character thoughts or the AU angle being at all relevant.

This is a pretty secret.

I still see these in Steven Universe fandom, if that counts for anything. A lot of them deal with what Garnet was feeling at times where she didn't express much out loud.

Oh my god, I HATE that type of fic. It just seems like a huge waste of time to me because most of the time, it's just repetition of what we saw in the episode with some crap about how the characters actions SEEMED annoyed or something but really, it's just covering how IN LOVE with the other character they are. Yeah, I hate the ones I've read.

We still have a lot of that in OUAT fandom. Like, give it an hour or so after the episode's done and there's a slew of little insights into character POVs on episode events, or missing scenes.

Depends on the fandom, I suppose.

i love those type of fanfic and have noticed they've been harder to find over time, at least now i know it wasn't just me.

The problem I have with fics like that is that all too often they are too busy repeating canon and fail to really give insight into the POV character's head. If they manage to give plenty of insight into a character's thoughts, then they work.

This. If it's just a recap of what's happened, then I'll just go re-watch the canon rather than read that fic!

Yeah, I feel that fanfiction lost some variety because authors have got so sophisticated or at least aware of the mainstream idea of 'good'. I read ep tags in SGA and Psych fandoms. If I think a scene is amazing I enjoy reading about it so I get to experience it again.

I remember this in the X-Files fandom.

At least with that show, I think it partly had to do with the technology of the time. There wasn't DVR or Netflix/Hulu where you could watch episodes 3 or 4 at a time. Each week, while waiting for the new episode and just thinking about the old one, people could write a whole POV of the latest episode. I used to just do this in my head.

Instead, a lot of times we now watch a few at a time, get the whole story arc and build on those overall themes as a writer rather than just the one episode.
