I remember this in the X-Files fandom.

At least with that show, I think it partly had to do with the technology of the time. There wasn't DVR or Netflix/Hulu where you could watch episodes 3 or 4 at a time. Each week, while waiting for the new episode and just thinking about the old one, people could write a whole POV of the latest episode. I used to just do this in my head.

Instead, a lot of times we now watch a few at a time, get the whole story arc and build on those overall themes as a writer rather than just the one episode.
