I'll second this one. The intense anti-immigrant attitude some have boggles my mind, especially since, y'know, immigration has kind of always been a big thing with the U.S.

Exactly. There are a lot of issues that matter to me, but this is the one closest to my heart. And considering this is what I want to do with my career, I've interned and studied immigration law and I've seen how awful it is and how it affects actual people. And how, even apart from immigration law, we treat them awfully. How the idea of "self deportation" as in making conditions so awful for them they want to leave is actually a serious thing believed by many. How they are excluded from so many things. I mean, people talk about them being a burden and taking welfare and stuff. Except they can't apply for most programs. They can't get ACA health insurance and most regular health insurances are blocked to them too. They often pay taxes and get no benefit in return. So they are actually contributing to our country without even getting the basic things that everyone should have a right to.

Does it? It's pretty easy to understand. The capitalist politicians stir up the lower and middle classes against a selected scapegoat, over and over again. Immigrants always have differences (language, culture, origin) that make it easy to turn them into an out-group to Other.

And people fall for it again and again, because it's easier for people to think they can just solve their problems by keeping some group out, then it is to think that the entire foundation their nation is built on is to exploit them and all the masses.

Oh, yeah, I know on one level WHY immigrants are treated so badly and whatnot.

I just meant more that I think it's sad and dumb that that attitude exists, and it's a depressing reminder of how ignorant so many people are of that aspect of our nation's history.

It's not ignorance, it's stupidity. You can teach people history again and again, and they won't make the connections between the past and what's happening now. "This is different." they'll say.
