Re: What do you personally consider young and old?

Don't care unless it's glaringly obvious that they're much much younger or much much older than me.

I mean... I was a 14 year old in fandom once. I interacted with people who had to be 40-50+. I don't see why I can't extend young people the same courtesy and knowledge those old fen did.

My worry in those kinds of situations is not that people who are young as hell don't deserve courtesy. My anxiety is that my interactions with them are going to be somehow exploitative, or creepy, or weird on my part.

That was one good thing about past fandom. The under 18s kept quiet about being under 18 and didn't rock the bat in order to avoid being thrown out, so you didn't have to worry about creepiness so much. Now the kids are all screaming and acting like brain damaged baboons and yelling "pedo" if they get shut down in an argument. A little extra gatekeeping would do us all a lot of good.

Back then we all lied about being underage.

Lying about being underage and learning how to get away with it is a valuable life skill.

Right? Kids these days...

Well, that sounds like a personal problem.

Oh, sure, one of the varied manifestations of my anxiety issues. But I'm just saying, there's different reasons for people to think that kinda thing. It's not necessarily a question of disrespect.

Fair point.

I personally do not have this problem. I'm pretty sure I interact with people under 18 in fandom really, really frequently (given some of my fandoms) and I've never had an issue.

Really, it's people my own age who I tend to have more friction with.
