Sounds like your buddy is another one of those who wants to get on the Cassandra Claire gravy train and will find out it's a lot harder than it looks without a well-connected lawyer buddy who can get you movie and print rights.

Maya (Sarah Rees Brennan) wrote some good Harry/Draco fics and took them all down 10 years ago and has since published ... uh, a trilogy I've never even heard anybody mention like, ever.

Two trilogies, actually. The first one was kind of a mess (each book had a different POV character, which worked for two books but not the third), so I'm not sure how many fans followed her after that.

A couple of things.

1) Sarah Rees Brennan's books are UK bestsellers and she landed a six figure deal for that trilogy you've never heard anyone mention, so I wouldn't throw her a pity party just yet. Or at least, I hope that level of pathetic obscurity descends upon me ASAP.

2) Very few authors negotiate their own movie and print rights. That's what agents do, and it is possible to get a good agent without being Cassandra Clare.
