Depends on how the trailer's made, really. The bad ones give too much away, only you don't realize it until you watch the movie and find out that you've already heard all the good lines. Or there are those trailers that are trying not to give too much away but go the opposite direction: everything's a disjointed mess and you have no idea wtf is going on.
