So I've noticed most of the reason I get writers block is cause I get bogged down in too much detail. If characters are need to, says, go into a house and fetch another character for something, I will get super bogged down in working out how they get to the house and like, them climbing stairs to get to the characters room or whatever. And of course I grind myself to a halt describing too much and ruining the pacing, and I inevitably have to go back condense shit to get out of the block.

Idk why I'm posting this I've just kinda recently worked out the root of my problem. Anyone else have things they do in writing that mess themselves up?

I have the opposite problem. I have issues being detailed enough. I generally have a decent plot planned, but I have trouble fleshing out details sometimes.

same here! I know there's something to be said for being succinct, but I worry I'm leaving the reader confused because obviously i know what's happening so I might not notice if I'm insufficiently detailing things....

This is why I stick to mostly writing porn. I can do details in porn. My fics usually end up between 1000 and 3000 words, which is a decent length for porn. Other genres I struggle with, though.

I do the exact same thing. The trick I've taken to using when I find myself doing this is to give myself permission to make a *big* jump--way longer than I think I can afford to make. So if Joe needs to go into the house, go upstairs, find Ezra, and bring him outside, I'll jump straight from Joe standing outside alone to Joe standing outside with Ezra.

More often than not, I realize that all that stuff slowing me down was unnecessary--the story flows just fine without it, and the reader can fill in the blanks without any trouble. If it feels like too big a leap, though, I usually have a sense of what in particular is missing--okay, I don't need to describe Joe opening the door, but the moment of walking into Ezra's room is really important, so that's my new pickup point.

Hopefully that helps? Give it a try next time you find yourself stuck like that and maybe it'll work for you!

Yeah, I definitely need to let myself make jumps more, cause when I go back I realize how much was unnecessary in the first place. Thanks for the tip! I will try it next time.
