What is the definition of "fandom"?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-24 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I am in the middle of an argument with some members of my fandom group of individuals who happen to all be fans of the same thing... over my use of the word "fandom". I used it to mean the collective group of us who are fans of this particular thing, whether we're doing it on Tumblr or Instagram or writing fic or making gifs or just lurking quietly... we are fans. We are fandom.

They are pissed off because apparently calling them "fandom" is calling them "shippers" and they aren't "crazy shippers" who cook up crazy fan theories on Tumblr...

So how do you define "fandom"?

Fandom = a group of people who get fannish over a thing.

Being "fannish" to me implies a level of investment that goes beyond having a casual or passing interest, and can (but doesn't necessarily have to) include such activities as:
- formulating fan theories and headcanons
- producing and consuming fanworks such as fic, art, vids, meta, etc.
- having in-depth discussions with other fans about the thing you are fannish about
- just generally spending a lot of time thinking about and analyzing the thing

Seconding this definition. Pretty much sums it up.

This exactly.

Someone who simply watches/plays/reads something isn't automatically in fandom, though of course their opinion is still valid and they can certainly call themselves a fan. Being in fandom has always implied more of an involvement to me, even if your consumption of the material is mostly done whilst lurking.

The collective of fans for a given source.

I think fandom has to imply a community that interacts. Discusses, creates, explores the series.

I think one can be a fan, and be obsessive about something, without being part of the fandom.

Yes, exactly!
