Insistence that a pairing is going to be canon when it obviously isn't. Particularly after people actually involved with the show have said it won't be.

Kidfic with zero understanding of how children work.

Insisting that canon must be interpreted exactly how you interpret it. Particularly in regards to which characters the fans should hate.

God. I love when I read a kidfic that has children that ACTUALLY act like children. It is just...so fucking nice.

Yesss. I love kids, I love reading about my favorite characters having kids, but nothing throws me out of the story faster than things like "And then our three day old baby giggled" or "The precocious 13 month old said in flawless grammar."

EDIT: Not to mention SUPER SERIOUS three year olds and 'wise beyond their years' kids who haven't even entered puberty.

I read a kidfic recently that had such an in character kid and I was just like YEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS more of this. It is usually people writing kids as acting older than they should at a certain age.

You can always tell when a writer doesn't actually have any kids or close family/friends with kids. And it's relatively easy to google, so I don't get it!

Completely agreed on this. I get that writing children can be tough sometimes, but it seems like so many fic authors go to one default extreme or the other with ALL children in stories. They're either super precocious or talk like babies even when they're five or six years old. There's rarely ever any variety.

Yes, especially to the last one. When canon leaves a lot of room for interpretation, people should be allowed to interpret how they want. And even when I think an interpretation strays outside canon, that's just my opinion. I'm not going to try to stop someone from interpreting the way they want.

This is a major issue in my fandom.

It bothers me when people insist a pairing is canon when it isn't, regardless of the likelihood of it eventually happening. Canon is only what we have so far. Some things may be more likely than others. But canon ships aren't at all superior to non-canon ships, so why the need to insist something is canon when it isn't (either yet or ever).

Yep, there's a lot of ONE TRUE CANON in the fandoms I've been in. And a lot of 'anyone who likes X is a moron.'

I have never understood this idea that 'being canon' is the be-all end-all to shipping. I hated most of how the original Avatar series ended, and so I... Continued to happily read my non-canon ships and not give a damn. While the rest of the fandom had a collective heart attack and flipped their shit. And now I'm in Sherlock and SPN fandom and it makes Avatar look like pillow fights.

My current fandom mostly doesn't have ship wars (My two OTPs involve the same character, though ship two only happens after the other character in ship one is gone, and sometimes there are fans of ship one who really hate ship two) for the most part. I don't miss it at all. Honestly this is the nicest fandom I've been in.

Oh man, TJLC had me feeling so alienated from Sherlock fandom (which is pretty much my only fandom) for like a year. I mostly just lurk and read fanfic extensively, but even then I felt like I couldn't get away from all the TJLC theorizing or block it out.

Like, I ship Johnlock as hard as anyone one of those TJLCers, and yes the thought of them with other people makes me sad inside. But that's what headcanon and fanon is for.

I also ship Johnlock, but DAMN that fandom is full of insanity. And TJLCers tend to be involved in other fandom wank as well. Not to mention all the hate poor Martin Freeman's wife gets for daring to play... his wife.

I don't get the insistence on ships having to be canon, either, or the huge gloat-fest fans of canon pairings have where they mock non-canon shippers.

I've got tons of pairings I love that aren't canon. Would it be cool if they got together on the shows in question? Sure. I certainly wouldn't complain about that, 'cause it'd be nice to see them together and happy.

But if the series ends and they're still not together? *Shrugs* Oh, well. Doesn't stop me shipping them, doesn't stop me writing or reading fic about them. Just 'cause the series ends doesn't mean the characters' lives stop there (unless they're killed off in the canon, but even then, in fanfic you can always bring dead characters back to life, so...). There's still plenty more stories that can be told.

Re: Pet Peeves

Yeah, I learned the lesson early because as a young thing, I shipped Zutara. And there was this baffling trend in the Avatar fandom to not only mock people for shipping Zutara, but to insist that they actually shouldn't ship it anymore because it wasn't canon. And I had to learn that I could scream and fight and get nowhere, or I could shrug and go back to my fanfic.

I agree, there's so much more to read and write about.

Re: Pet Peeves

well also Zutara shippers in general were pretty terrible. I mean, calling Kataang shippers pedophiles types of terrible. And I'm saying this as someone who started out shipping it.

Granted, Kataang shippers were also pretty awful back.

I was on the side of feeling like romance with a 12 year old was really really weird, and I was young so I probably wasn't the most mature, but I tried to stay out of the fighting.

Zutara shippers could be pretty awful themselves, absolutely! It's just that the Kataang shippers then decided they'd 'won' and I never really got that.

AYRT

Ergh. I'm sorry. Ship wars are so annoying and I try and stay out of them as best I can.

insist that they actually shouldn't ship it anymore because it wasn't canon

*Shakes head* Yeah, that line of thinking makes absolutely no sense to me at all. By all means, people can ship a canon pairing if they love it. Just as I have non-canon pairings I like, I also have a few canon ones I'm a fan of, too. There's some great canon relationships out there.

But how do people who make that argument not get the point that part of the appeal for some fans is exploring stuff that happens beyond the show, or playing "what if" and imagining what would happen if the story/relationship went this way instead? Whether a fan adheres to canon or goes the non-canon route, neither option is wrong. Both are great ways to explore the show/film/book and the characters, both allow for fans to be imaginative and creative, and both are, or should be, welcome and acceptable in fandom.
