Fandom pet peeves

People who thinks fandom belongs to them and get mad when things don't go their way or when writers or artists or whatever don't do what they want.

Character bashing. Ship bashing. Anything bashing.

People who don't understand the difference between opinion and fact and who think their opinions are fact.

Ship wars and fandom wars in general.

I dislike it when an adult uses "child talk" in an adult situation. Such as "sorry I placed this order to the wrong account, I made a booboo". Seriously?

What would be the equivalent of shaming or telling people off but!!!! people use !!!! way too many !!! exclamation points and lowercase letters as to not appear threatening.

Insistence that a pairing is going to be canon when it obviously isn't. Particularly after people actually involved with the show have said it won't be.

Kidfic with zero understanding of how children work.

Insisting that canon must be interpreted exactly how you interpret it. Particularly in regards to which characters the fans should hate.

God. I love when I read a kidfic that has children that ACTUALLY act like children. It is just...so fucking nice.

Yes, especially to the last one. When canon leaves a lot of room for interpretation, people should be allowed to interpret how they want. And even when I think an interpretation strays outside canon, that's just my opinion. I'm not going to try to stop someone from interpreting the way they want.

This is a major issue in my fandom.

It bothers me when people insist a pairing is canon when it isn't, regardless of the likelihood of it eventually happening. Canon is only what we have so far. Some things may be more likely than others. But canon ships aren't at all superior to non-canon ships, so why the need to insist something is canon when it isn't (either yet or ever).

Having a character call another character a nickname that has never been used and is stupid (calling Derek 'Der' for instance).

Oh jeez, this so hard. 'Der' in any Teen Wolf fic is enough to make me clock out, usually.

Oh my god this. Can I just say, this is a thing in my ship fandom, and I don't get it. There are very few nicknames used in Tolkien. Tyelpe is pretty universally used for Celebrimbor, and I think that works. Mel and Mai for Melkor and Mairon, though? No. Melkor I can see using diminutive or possessive nicknames for Mairon. Mairon I can't see using nicknames at all. And neither of them would use cutesy names.

Alternately, calling a character by their given name when it's not (or rarely) used in canon. If someone other than Nana refers to Hardison as "Alec" in your Leverage fic, I'm out.

All the judgments about a movie before anyone's even seen it.

People who feel they have to pick sides (DC vs Marvel, Star Wars vs Star Trek, etc.), and then jump on the "other" side for whatever reason.

Fandom: comments that begin "I don't like/never read XYZ, but..."

Non-fandom: when there's a weird draft in the shower and the shower curtain keeps sticking to you. ICK.

I can't stand when people pretend their personal headcanons are canon, then go on and harass anyone who thinks differently from them.

People who write critique like a high schooler being forced to write a book report but with nothing to say other than "eh, didn't like it." Especially when critiquing or not is a choice.

If you're going to give critique at least try and be specific and not "eh I found it boring. Make it more interesting."

Okay? I don't know what to do with that really. It's more of a general opinion and an unspecific demand. I should add that my feelings weren't hurt by it. I just don't know what I'm supposed to do with such vague 'advice'.

Coworkers dumping stuff at the Customer Service desk and leaving. I can almost guarantee that whatever you expect me to do with it is not my job, and even if it is, you haven't told me what needs doing.

When the "LET'S RACEBEND ALL THE WHITE CHARACTERS INTO POC" trend is applied to characters that aren't actually white. Like the Sailor Senshi, or the Maximoff twins, or to give a more recent example, Poe Dameron from Star Wars.

It really, really bothers me when people ignore that Peter Pettigrew was just as much a part of the Marauders as James, Sirius and Remus, and not just an annoying tag along.

Job applications that ask for resumes, but then also have you feel out the exact same information on their system - work experience, education, and such.

Fandom: The old fashioned Mary Sue witch hunts of days past. I remember the horrors of those days.

Nonfandom: JESUS FUCKING CHRIST DO NOT FUCKING STEAL FOOD FROM MY FUCKING PLATE WITHOUT ASKING. I DON'T DO IT TO YOU, DON'T DO IT TO ME. *clears throat* I mean: I hate when people think they deserve to be vultures and steal food from someone's plate without asking.

The way some of my fandom friends say they ship a certain enemy pair because they love the conflict and power struggle... but what they write and draw is almost all fluff. Friends, I judge you harder for lying than I would if you were honest and said you ship them because they look pretty together.
