Re: Pet Peeves

Oh, it was definitely complicated and he very much seemed to hero worship James and Sirius (As evidenced in Snape's worst memory, as well as the conversation Harry overhears in the Three Broomsticks in PoA). I agree that I think he was closest to Remus, especially as Sirius and James were so close, but I still think they were all very good friends (Or at least that the rest of the Marauders thought so. How Peter felt may be different, especially as they got older and had to actually fight Voldemort)

I think he was a lot closer to the rest of the Marauders than for instance Neville was to the Trio (While Neville and Peter are very different characters, they also have some similarities, especially when it comes to being the one that seems to be less talented than others). While Neville never really were part of whatever the Trio did until OotP, Peter seemed to be a part of everything from becoming Animagi to creating the Marauder's map. Not to mention how he eventually became the Secret-Keeper, even if it was as a gambit. That shows how much they actually trusted him. I also find it telling that Lily refers to him as Wormy in her letter to Sirius, as she just as easily could have called him Peter instead of using an affectionate nickname. There's really nothing in canon that points to the relationship as being "ugh we can barely tolerate him" as fic usually shows (which you do sort of mention, I just started ranting a bit here c:)

Time travel fic are really the only ones were I don't at least consider backing out of a fic with random Pettigrew hate, and then it has to be the time traveller who does the hating. Even then it makes me happy if it acknowledges that he was a part of the group, which I feel like I see very rarely. I remember being pleasantly surprised by what I think was a time travel Sirius/Hermione fic from years back where she really got to know him and see why the others seemed to like him as a person.

Not to mention how he eventually became the secret-keeper, even if it was just as a gambit.

Is it actually canon that it was a gambit, though? Because when you come to think of it, rats can climb vertical walls, jump a yard, reach a foot, swim half a mile, squeeze through a hole the size of a dime, and chew through almost anything. The creatures practically have superpowers. And who can hide in plain sight like a rat? Peter did it for twelve years! TBH, I suspect that the Marauders learned early to value and make use of Peter's ratty abilities, and he would have made the ideal Secret-Keeper if it weren't for the tiny little hitch that he was already working for Voldemort.

Sort of at least, considering that Sirius was the first and most obvious choice, while Peter was one of the least obvious. That's part of what landed Sirius in Azkaban after all, as everyone thought that they followed the original plan and made him Secret-Keeper, which made it seem that he was the one who had sold the Potters out. I think it was Sirius himself who suggested it, but I may be remembering it incorrectly. (I think he says so in PoA, in the Shrieking Shack, when Remus is hurt that he wasn't included in it)

I definitely agree that that made use of Peter's ratty abilities. Overall a rat is a way more convenient Animagus form than a stag for instance! A stag can't really help you with pranking, after all.
