Oh my god this. Can I just say, this is a thing in my ship fandom, and I don't get it. There are very few nicknames used in Tolkien. Tyelpe is pretty universally used for Celebrimbor, and I think that works. Mel and Mai for Melkor and Mairon, though? No. Melkor I can see using diminutive or possessive nicknames for Mairon. Mairon I can't see using nicknames at all. And neither of them would use cutesy names.

It won't make me stop reading but it always takes me out of the fic. Like, 'Really? You think they would use that nick name? REALLY?'

It depends for me. In this case it does take me out of a fic because it is just so out of character and also not appropriate for the fandom (unless its a modern AU, and I mostly don't read those).
