Having a character call another character a nickname that has never been used and is stupid (calling Derek 'Der' for instance).

Oh jeez, this so hard. 'Der' in any Teen Wolf fic is enough to make me clock out, usually.

Der isn't even a name mentioned on the show. EVERRRRR.

I know this is supposed to sound like Dare, but I read it as Durr, every single time. And yeah, it's dumb.

Oh my god this. Can I just say, this is a thing in my ship fandom, and I don't get it. There are very few nicknames used in Tolkien. Tyelpe is pretty universally used for Celebrimbor, and I think that works. Mel and Mai for Melkor and Mairon, though? No. Melkor I can see using diminutive or possessive nicknames for Mairon. Mairon I can't see using nicknames at all. And neither of them would use cutesy names.

It won't make me stop reading but it always takes me out of the fic. Like, 'Really? You think they would use that nick name? REALLY?'

It depends for me. In this case it does take me out of a fic because it is just so out of character and also not appropriate for the fandom (unless its a modern AU, and I mostly don't read those).

Alternately, calling a character by their given name when it's not (or rarely) used in canon. If someone other than Nana refers to Hardison as "Alec" in your Leverage fic, I'm out.

The ONLY time I am okay with that is for characters that get into a romantic relationship. I sort of assume characters that move from a work/friendship to romantic relationship to use more intimate names.

This brings me back to my years in the X-Files fandom. Scully calling Mulder "Fox" was a deal breaker basically 100% of the time, and for probably 99% of the fandom. Every once in a while you'd come across a fic where Scully would call Mulder "Fox," and that's how you knew you were reading an incredibly bad shipper fic that basically made the characters into generic Ken and Barbie. It was an instant "bail out" signal.

Mulder calling Scully "Dana" was not quite so bad, since Mulder does actually use her first name occasionally in the show.

This is me with Sherlock Holmes fandom and fic using Holmes & Watson's first names that isn't set in the BBC series or Elementary. Because no.

Somebody convinced me to give Spideypool a chance. I did so, in spite of my initial misgivings, but gave up when I was unable to find a single fic where Deadpool doesn't refer to Spider-Man as "baby boy".

Where the fuck does that even come from?

I literally just shuddered (it probably doesn't help that I can't stand spideypool. deadpool/cable 5ever). I mean, I guess I can see him doing it to be an obnoxious dick, but other than that...

That's actually in the comic(s).

Oh god that nickname never made sense, who came up with that? Why was it a thing?

I'm also not a fan of pet names, makes me pull a bit of a face and I clock out typically.

D: THE WORST (I was always deeply hurt by "De" in Supernatural fic. HIS NAME IS ONE SYLLABLE ALREADY)

Ahaha, oh, my god, seriously? Wow.

HA. Or when he calls Laura 'Lo'. I have read that in several fics. WTH? Nobody named 'Laura' is called 'Lo'. It's like, no matter the name, there MUST BE A NICKNAME!!!!!

Der, Lo, and Co. Really, that does not work for me.
