Re: Great source; baaaaaad fic

I've only read a little "NCIS" fic here and there, but from what I have seen, I'm just amused by the huge prevalence of stories where Tim and Ziva (and sometimes Abby) are super mean to Tony and then he leaves the team, and the others get their comeuppance and whatnot. It always turns into some dramatic "I'll show you" fantasy, and Tony is woobified like crazy in the process.

Oooh, I hate those!

I also hate the opposite - I'm not saying that Tony can't be a bully, but there comes a time when things become too OTT, and it's just hard to believe.

Exactly. Certainly these people can be immature and annoying sometimes, even harsh, but there's ways to deal with that that don't turn the story into some ridiculously unrealistic drama.

OMG Yes! I mean, I like Tony, he's probably my favorite, so I definitely don't mind when fics make him out to be the good guy. But NCIS fics go waaaay overboard with this, more than any other fandom I've ever been in. The absolute vitriol in some of those stories...and of course all the weeping that follows.

Re: Great source; baaaaaad fic

No, yeah, I totally get that. Reid from "Criminal Minds" is my favorite character, and sometimes I see this with stories about him, too. A team member makes a joke about his quirks or something and people get all offended over it and I'm just like, "Oh, geez...". Thankfully, it's not anywhere near the extreme that you see in the "NCIS" fandom, and I'm not even denying that sometimes certain characters don't know when to quit with their teasing and can occasionally go too far.

But honestly, these guys work for the federal government. If they get THAT slighted and offended over a (perhaps poorly worded) joke or a bit of teasing, then I think they're very much in the wrong line of work, 'cause they're going to hear and see a hell of a lot worse directed at them or people they're close to.

Not to mention, given the stressful nature of the work the BAU or the people in NCIS or other similar law enforcement jobs do, and given these people are around each other practically 24/7 due to the unusual nature of their jobs, constantly being crammed into cars and hotels and police stations and airports together...that means that some days, they're going to be crabby and say the wrong thing or lose their patience with each other as a result It happens with ANY group of people that spends a lot of time around each other. And I think sometimes some fans tend to forget that fact.

ITA. With NCIS and the Tony situation, I think people maybe focused on the wrong issues. There were some really weird things going on with that team, odd dynamics and shady spy stuff and not very legal problem-solving etc. And a very minor symptom was how Tony was treated (but also acted!) like the fool. So loads of fics start out with people teasing Tony and somehow that turns into Ziva, the Director and assorted others being Evil.

Maybe it's the pairing I prefer for him, or how quickly I recognize bad fic these days, but I haven't come across that many woobie!Reid fics. He's my favorite too and while I'd hate to see it, I can totally picture it. But yeah, why anyone would think Reid couldn't take a hit is weird. One of his better known lines is the one to Hotch: 'I was a 12 year old prodigy in a Vegas public high school'. If he got upset at a bit of teasing, he wouldn't have gotten this far. Pretty much all the characters on these shows have crappy pasts, so I can't see any of them breaking down completely like in fics.

Yeah, I've seen a handful of "NCIS" episodes, but I've read up on some of the big stuff that happens on that show, and I think it makes total sense that those sorts of crazy moments would have an impact on how the characters relate to each other.

I'm glad you haven't come across too much of that with Reid. Like I said, it's not a common thing, thankfully, but I've come across a bit of it here and there. Maybe the pairing one follows does factor into that-I mentioned in another discussion that I'm a Reid/JJ shipper, and also like Reid/Morgan. Morgan likes to tease Reid sometimes, and then there was that tension between Reid and JJ after the whole "Emily's supposedly dead" situation, and I've run into a few fans who aren't fans of JJ or Morgan in recent years, so I think that explains some of that on my end.

(Also, now I'm curious what pairing you like for him :). I'm pretty open to most pairings involving Reid.)

But yeah, why anyone would think Reid couldn't take a hit is weird. One of his better known lines is the one to Hotch: 'I was a 12 year old prodigy in a Vegas public high school'. If he got upset at a bit of teasing, he wouldn't have gotten this far.

*Nods* EXACTLY. We know what his school days were like. He's well aware of the difference between actually being legit bullied and tormented, and a teammate having a grumpy moment and snapping at him or teasing him a little.

Plus, he can give as good as he gets. He didn't exactly back down when fighting with JJ over the aforementioned Emily thing, he got a few pretty snippy barbs in at her, too. And he pranks and teases Morgan about as much as Morgan pranks and teases him :p. So yeah. He can hold his own, for sure :D.

I read either gen with a preference for Reid-centered fics, or Hotch/Reid. It's how I knew that quote so well ;)

The shippy ones I've bothered to read to the end keep Reid pretty strong. I think it's because of the age difference between him and Hotch. If Reid becomes too much of a woobie, that can get kind of weird. Also, Hotch has been through a bunch of crap on the show as well, so it's more a mutual support thing. One thing I dislike about the pairing is that the majority of the fics seem to be Established Relationship. I like UST, dammit. And of course, TPTB seem to have forgotten the two characters can share a scene together.

I can see the appeal of both Reid/JJ and Reid/Morgan. I'm fairly sure I've even read a few fics. I thought his crush on JJ was adorable, but I also really like the idea of him being godfather and that way becoming part of her family, something he never really had before. He and Morgan have great interactions, so I never knew what was keeping me back, until a while ago. Morgan calls him 'kid'. It's a minor thing, but it takes all the potential sexual chemistry out of it for me.

Ahhhhhh, okay. I've been reading a bit more Hotch/Reid lately-there's an author, DeejayMil, who's been writing some really interesting stories with that pairing.

I love that quote, too. "L.D.S.K." is a great episode in general, but those last ten minutes or so with all the stuff with Hotch and Reid is particularly good.

Hm. That makes sense, I can definitely see that. Hotch is particularly good at bringing out Reid's more confident side, and I can see where the age difference might help in that regard, too. Some couples, the age difference can be a hinderance, but in their case, I think it could work for them. And great point as well about the mutual support thing-indeed, it's almost like a competition between those two to see who's been through more hellish experiences sometimes :p. Poor things.

One thing I dislike about the pairing is that the majority of the fics seem to be Established Relationship. I like UST, dammit. And of course, TPTB seem to have forgotten the two characters can share a scene together.

Ah, I LOVE UST, too :D. Yeah. I can see where that'd be frustrating-now that you mention it, I don't think I have really run across much in the way of "unrequited' fics involving those two. That's odd, 'cause it's sure prevalent whenever either of them are shipped when someone else.

I just want to know what the Hotch/Reid fans' thing with putting them into supernatural situations is :p. It seems a lot of the Hotch/Reid stories I come across are supernatural-based in nature for some reason, and I'm curious why that seems to be such a popular thing with that pairing.

I'll also agree about wanting more scenes and moments between them. Given some of the stuff they've both been through in recent years especially, on the personal side of things in particular, there's SO much opportunity for a good heart-to-heart talk between them, or a chance to spend time together commiserating over the shit they've each dealt with. Definitely a missed opportunity on the show's part. Hopefully someday we'll get something like that again.

I just love the quiet, subtle closeness between him and JJ. And like you said, his crush on her was really cute-and I'm inclined to believe he still has a bit of one on her even now :). They've had a few really sweet, special moments over the years that I could see being a good basis for a relationship (if she weren't already married, of course :p). I don't really know how to explain it, but they've just got a sweet chemistry that I enjoy :).

And I LOVE that he's godfather to her kids. If they ever were to get together romantically, he'd already have the close bond with her children, which would make it easier.

(Incidentally, that reminds me that I'm not all that big on fics where he's actually the father of her kids instead of Will. It's kinda nice to focus on the fact that he loves her kids not because they're biologically his, but because he cares about her and cares about her children and comes to love them that way, you know?)

Morgan calls him 'kid'. It's a minor thing, but it takes all the potential sexual chemistry out of it for me.

*Nods* I can totally understand that, yeah. I tend to chalk that up to a "Here's looking at you, kid" sort of thing, but I can definitely see why that would be jarring when trying to see them in a romantic light. Plus, they also act SO much like brothers a lot of the time that when you're viewing them in that light, transitioning from that to seeing them as a couple would feel a little strange :p.

No shit. I'd never even seen the tag "original human characters" until I started looking for Criminal Minds fic, but I guess that fandom really can use the distinction.

ayrt

I've read some of DeejayMil's fics, but her biggest Hotch/Reid series is truly huge, so I'm saving it for when I'm in the mood for a marathon session. It's one with daemons so you're right about the supernatural elements. Honestly, I hadn't noticed that, but I also spend a lot of time in BBC Sherlock fandom and weird gets a whole new meaning there.

I think the whole supernatural theme might have something to do with the lack of interaction on screen and lack of UST fics. People can see them together as normal people just fine, it's getting them there that's the problem. But if there's magic or scenting or whatever involved, that's taken care of. It's more than a bit lazy IMO. It's one thing if they're already pining for each other and then suddenly they find out that 'omg, our soulmarks match', but if they're strangers/co-workers and nothing more until *trope* and suddenly they're madly in love, that's boring.

I might be wrong though, I tend to skip a lot of supernatural fics.

Btw, while there aren't as many as I'd like, there are a few UST fics. I don't know about 'unrequited'. I do remember a few dealing with Beth. Sometimes that meant unrequited, or they had been together but weren't anymore,...Good stuff ;)

Yeah, the show sometimes drops the ball on the character/relationship stuff. But in this case it's pretty obvious. They had a nice connection in the first few seasons and then it seemed like it was suddenly gone. Occasionally there'll be moments, but...I honestly thought after Maeve died, Hotch would be the most logical choice, but that was never really dealt with at all.

JJ and Reid are really sweet. I think I see a more sibling-like relationship too though. The way she comforts him and gives him advice. I think I would have shipped it more if they hadn't shot it down in the same ep they first suggested it. Or was it the one after? But I binge-watched the first few seasons and it felt like 'oh, that's a cute ide-oh, guess not'.

And there are JJ/Reid shippers who want her kids to be his? I'm with you on that one, that's no fun. A big part of Hotch/Reid fics is dealing with Jack and how is he going to fit into this. So I totally get why that aspect would appeal.

Morgan definitely cares a lot about Reid (and vice versa), but to me it definitely feels like he views him as a kid brother. Someone who needs looking out for at times. Though maybe Morgan's just the type of guy who feels that way about everyone. A protector, you know.

I'm terrible with fic names and authors, so there's only one name I can give you for Hotch/Reid fics right now: EloquentDossier. I don't like/haven't read all of them, lots of AUs and supernatural stuff again. But I did like: Late Nights Verse, Bright, Golden Letters Verse (soulmarks), Chain Reaction (AU), Come Undone (WIP, Omegaverse which I tend to shy away from, but this has a cool twist and an awesome Reid).

Heh, I just checked the author on th handful of decent CM fics I've found, and they were both Deejaymil.
