but the fanfic is mostly terrible with the same recycled High School AU crap everywhere (and the B/V side of things having nothing but that and 'Three Years' fic, variety is not that fandom's strong point).

Late comment, but have you ever read Vejiitasei Ascendant? It's an epic canon AU, and it definitely has variety, as there's not another fic like it. It's not on any archive, but a now-defunct Geocities page.

I think I started reading that way back when I was first in the fandom but never finished it, and it was mentioned on f!s at some point too but I didn't manage to find it, and now you have linked it too me! Bless you nonnie.
