Dragonball Z, while I wound't say it had the best writing ever it did have some great characters and interactions but the fanfic is mostly terrible with the same recycled High School AU crap everywhere(and the B/V side of things having nothing but that and 'Three Years' fic, variety is not that fandom's strong point).

That 70's Show was a really fun show with some great characters, but the fanfic is kind of iffy for the most part and it's often chock-full of melodrama when it comes to ship-fic.

And Left 4 Dead has some fun characters but the fic is a bit hit or miss imo and a lot of the Nick/Ellis fic had the problem of making Ellis way too dumb or sexually inexperienced to a level I couldn't buy(sometimes it would be both).

Agreed on the L4D fic. I always hated it when people would make Ellis so dumb. I mean, he had an auto repair shop with his buddies, he can't be that dumb.

Yeah, he might not necessarily be academically smart but the guy knows how to pull apart car engines and put them back together. That isn't stupid by any means.

I agree with the Left 4 Dead thing. It also really annoys me the way that FUCKING EVERYONE spells his accent out phonetically to a ridiculous degree. Reading his dialogue in fics is agonizing. Also, why is it that most people only phonetically write out Southern accents (and Scottish accents)? If you're going to phonetically write one person's dialogue then you might as well really commit to being an annoying asshole and do it for everyone

DO NOT GET ME STARTED ON THE PHONETIC THING OKAY. JESUS.

That would also be a massive pet peeve of mine in that fandom, and in fandoms in general. Also in actual published books/comics(LOOKING AT YOU MARVEL, STOP IT).

But yeah it's awful and makes reading fic 100x harder for me.

omfg Marvel. It's not as bad nowadays (usually) but reading the dialogue of characters like Remy and Rogue was downright painful in the 80s and 90s. I think the very worst example though is the fact that there was a panel of Sam Guthrie shown writing a letter (to his family iirc correctly) and the letter itself was written out phonetically. who the fuck painstakingly writes out their own dialect? it was pretty hysterical (and annoying as hell)

Gambit and Rogue especially were who I was thinking of, it was so bad and I can't believe no one questioned it. I mean I guess it was to obviously show they had accents but before I saw the cartoons I legit did not know what accent Rogue was supposed to have.

Part of me died inside reading this.

I agree about That 70s Show. There is a handful of heartwarming stories but everything else is either a retcon or a secret pregnancy or death or some combination of the three.

Yup, even though I'm cool with retcon fics that ignore the last season(because I didn't like it at all), only a handful are okay because they often end up falling into the latter scenarios you've mentioned.

Late comment, but have you ever read Vejiitasei Ascendant? It's an epic canon AU, and it definitely has variety, as there's not another fic like it. It's not on any archive, but a now-defunct Geocities page.

Late response from me! (Because I am scatterbrained).

I think I started reading that way back when I was first in the fandom but never finished it, and it was mentioned on f!s at some point too but I didn't manage to find it, and now you have linked it too me! Bless you nonnie.

So uh, yeah I'll be checking that out again. :)
