Great source; baaaaaad fic

What are some shows/movies/books/etc. that have amazing characters and/or great stories but for some reason get absolutely murdered when fanwriters get a hold of them?

Tell us all about it: OOC-ness? Dumb plots? Overused tropes? Bad writing in general? And if you're in a criticized fandom and feel offended, prove us wrong with some recs.

Criminal Minds

Why is the dialogue all so bad? Why does Reid squeak and whimper so much? Why are there SO MANY CROSSOVERS? Also: Insert standard plea for more gen [here].

Yes, this. Especially on the gen. Where are the case fics? I'm not in the show for shipping. I want unsubs and profiles and investigations.

I don't have a problem with crossovers for this fandom-there's been a few cool ones I've come across.

But I do agree that a lot of writers don't seem to know how to write Reid very well, unfortunately. And I love me some shippy fic, but I also love reading (and writing) gen and definitely think there should be more of that, too.

Re: Criminal Minds

(Anonymous) 2016-02-24 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, CM was my first thought too. I have a ship, so gen isn't my first wish, but the writing on most of them! NCIS has it even worse, so maybe it's the kind of show and the type of (novice?) writers it attracts.

And I don't usually mind crossovers because they're often easy to explain away. The same type of show or a shared actor or a fandom that's simply everywhere. But there's this bizarre trend of shipping Reid with a specific X-Men character and I'm pretty sure it's one of the biggest ships for him. Wtf, right?

If anyone has any recs for good fics though...

I think this is true of comedies in general because it is often hard to get the tone right. Outside of fics that are specifically shipper fics, I haven't found many good How I Met Your Mother fics. And as of yet there have only been a few good Galavant fics that I've seen.

I agree. I never bother with sitcom fic. Even if they're funny, the fic can't capture the timing and delivery of the actors, which is what a lot of the humor of at tv sitcom depends on.

I have never, ever found an Inuyasha fanfic that wasn't awful. Anime as a whole, for reasons I don't quite get, seems to have a disproportionate amount of bad fic. At least the big ones, like Inuyasha and Naruto.

Yu-Gi-Oh fic suffers heavily from this problem too.

Sad, but kind of true, and I say this as somebody who has spent most of my time in anime fandoms.
(It's funny because one of my earliest longfics was a Yugioh/Inuyasha crossover... it suffered from mediocre writing, but I was trying very hard with the plot).
ATM I'm in AoT fandom, and I have to admit that there are few fics I think are truly good.

I don't know you have to look hard but there are a few really good ones in Naruto and Bleach. Or maybe that's because I like reading angsty lemons.

The X-Men fandom's fic output has never been top-notch, but it's devolved into an absolute cesspool ever since XMFC came out and the Migratory Slash Fandom took over. I refuse to read any fic tagged with XMFC on principle, because I know it's going to be shit.

I've read some pretty great Scott/Logan fics (it's the only pairing I like from X-Men). There's also a lot of really, really bad ones though.

I remember XMFC fic being alright for a little while, then the top/bottom dynamics got really rigid and along with them came weird charactersations that didn't fit either Charles or Erik.

From the comics side of things though I found most of the Rictor/Shatterstar fic to be decent, though there isn't much and there are some duds too.

When the main character is player customizable down to the first name really, really bad things happen.

This is doubly true when one of the main love interests is a blue alien woman.

I've heard Dragon Age and Fire Emblem: Awakening also get a lot of fics where the customizable MC is used as an author stand-in who gets to be incredibly overpowered and bang the author's favorite love interest.

Attack on Titan is soooo starved for decent fic. I blame the plethora of modern AUs; it's harder to keep characters in character when torn out of their original setting and circumstance in the first place, and I haven't seen a single modern AU that manages to keep the characters feeling like they're actually the Aot characters.

OOCness is the worst problem.

Almost every good fic has its origins in the kinkmeme, or has a writer who writes for it. Which makes sense, since it seems to be largely the Tumblr crowd that revels in stupid AUs and characters that simply look vaguely like the Aot characters.

Yes. This is my issue with the fandom as well. Though, to my shame, though I won't read modern AUs, I have written one (it does interact heavily with the source material? So maybe?)

Isn't the kinkmeme mostly dead now, though?

Dragonball Z, while I wound't say it had the best writing ever it did have some great characters and interactions but the fanfic is mostly terrible with the same recycled High School AU crap everywhere(and the B/V side of things having nothing but that and 'Three Years' fic, variety is not that fandom's strong point).

That 70's Show was a really fun show with some great characters, but the fanfic is kind of iffy for the most part and it's often chock-full of melodrama when it comes to ship-fic.

And Left 4 Dead has some fun characters but the fic is a bit hit or miss imo and a lot of the Nick/Ellis fic had the problem of making Ellis way too dumb or sexually inexperienced to a level I couldn't buy(sometimes it would be both).

THE MCU

Don't get me wrong, I've read some good stuff. But for the size of the fandom, the quality (or, okay, POTENTIAL) of the source material [I love Marvel, but they're not necessarily *good* movies so much as really fun movies that could be actual good movies, ya feel?], and the number of amazing opportunities for subverting, rewriting, or filling out canon, I've had an extraordinarily hard time finding very much that rises above the most basic, OOC, badly-written junk.

Case in point: literally any story about Tony's relationship with his father is all about how cruel, emotionless, and grade-obsessed Howard is and has an 89% chance of containing the phrase "Stark men are made of iron." (YOU'RE NOT ORIGINAL OR CLEVER PLEASE STOP) I love angst as much as the next person, but I don't care about a cookie-cutter Rich Mean White Dad + Secretly Sensitive Genius Son; I'd much rather see somebody actually explore the relationship between a really eccentric guy who used to be a riot and now has the entire weight of worldwide nuclear destruction on his shoulders and his son who's too smart for his own good and not great at emotional processing and desperate to please and emulate that deeply flawed guy. But no, Stark men are made of iron.

And that's just the example that's currently near and dear to my heart. WHY IS ALL THE FIC SO BAD????

ACD Sherlock Holmes. So much slash, so little genfic. Actually I don't even mind the slash as long as there's an actual plot and a mystery to be solved. I just want Holmes and Watson, working a case, not an angsty love story!

I'd read Sherlock fic under the same circumstances. Don't give a shit about Johnlock or any other pairing, for that matter.
