I thought that the relationship being a trainwreck was the point.

Maybe I'm Doing Fandom Wrong.

Ugh. I just never got into them. I liked their friendship all right, though it wasn't one of my favorite things on the show even though she was one of my favorite characters. But I could never ship them or buy into their romance. It just didn't work for me at all.

Same here. I quite enjoyed their dynamic as friends (though like you it wasn't my favorite platonic relationship) but I couldn't stand them as a romantic ship. They really brought out the worst in each other when they were romantically/sexually involved.

Yay Battlestar Galactica secret! You're giving me a craving to go back and watch the first couple of seasons again.

I've finally admitted to myself I wasn't nearly as into them past S2, not so much because of the problems but the uninspired way the problems were handled. But they remain one of my all-time favorite ships regardless.

Meh. Kara/Anders FTW.

Agreed :)

Damn, I just realised that their relationship is almost identical to that of mine and my best guy friend.

I absolutely love Kara and Lee's relationship. I wouldn't say I ship it per se, because to me shipping something usually implies you want more or different for a pair of characters than what a show is giving you. And for the most part, I liked their relationship just as it was. I guess I always did want them together, but at the same time, I think I knew and accepted that they were way too fucked up to really be able to manage a romantic relationship between them.

The dynamics of their relationship felt so interesting and real, though. In some ways they often seemed like kid siblings, though not in an incesty way. Just that their relationship was so volatile but at the same time so durable; they could hate each other bitterly and still love each other, and it was fucked up, but at the same time it felt natural for them to be that way about each other.

I usually have no patience for fucked up fictional relationships, but with Kara and Lee it was often most obvious that they loved each other when they were fighting. And the characters were so well written and strong that it made sense why they were the way they were with each other.

I definitely agree with the sibling thing. I think Jacob of Television Without Pity used to refer to them as the Twins, and even Katee Sackhoff said he's like her soulmate and her best friend and her brother.

And maybe that's why they could never work as a romantic pairing? Not because it's actually incestuous (though you could have a case to call them actual step-siblings), but because there's that strong sibling aspect in their dynamic (competitive, bickery, both wishing for dad's approval, deep unconditional love for each other when it counts etc.) and when they try to break out of that and be romancey they just don't know what the hell they're doing?

Their relationship in the original show was much better, and more entertaining (as was the original show in general).
