[Fried Green Tomatoes]

I'm not sure if the general public is, but damn, I'd love it if they made that version anyway.

Yessss, so would I. Loved this film when I was younger, and a remake would be lovely. It is becoming more common for media to star openly gay characters though, so I'd like to think it's possible.

It's been a while since I've read the book, but... wasn't it only ever implied and hinted at? So their "full relationship" was never explicit and was open to interpretation.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Well, there was that one famous quote: "The two specialties here at the Whistlestop Café are fried green tomatoes, and pussy. Which ya feel like eatin'?"

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Uh... I don't think that quote is a thing. Can you cite where you saw that?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

I made it up. It's what we call a joke.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Ah. I didn't realize it was supposed to be funny, sorry.

Well, I totally thought Miss Good Ole Southern Lesbian, Fannie Flagg herself, wrote that line!

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't terribly explicit, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it was open to interpretation.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Er... it's a book. Everything is open to interpretation, surely.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
That's an odd thing to say.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Not really? Things that are implied are usually implied for a reason. You can't just say anything that isn't explicit is completely open to interpretation.

It was heavily implied and to me, was pretty obvious. It was also discussed in the making of the movie, and the director decided that their food fight would 'do' in lieu of showing them in a more romantic/intimate way.

*rolls eyes*

There wasn't any explicit sex, but iirc, it was obviously a lesbian relationship... been years since I read the book though.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
It's been over a decade since I read that book, but IIRC, Idgie courts Ruth, Ruth's initially afraid of their relationship because she's a religious type and runs away, she runs away from her abusive asshole beard husband quoting the "Whither thou goest, I will go" scripture, Idgie's father has a "man-to-man" talk with Idgie about doing right by her woman, they raise a child together, and when Idgie and Ruth fight, Idgie winds up kicked out of their shared bedroom. So... yeah, the sexual relationship is implied in the same way that most couples that you know would be, in that you haven't actually seen them have sex.

There's a scene where Idgie's mom is like "now children, your sister has a crush, don't go teasing her" and then another bit about how she's in love with Ruth. I remember the word "in love" being specifically used. I think it's as explicit as it was allowed to be at the time and still get the audience it had, maybe.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Well there is the scene in the book after Idgie rescues Ruth from her husband and Idgies parents sit Ruth down and ask her if she's really sure she wants to spend her life with their odd, stubborn, difficult daughter....

Please.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-02-25 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, why not. But then, it wasn't like lesbian films didn't get made back in then either.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
.....oh.

Now that I did not know.

Ohhh that would be nice. The original movie was so good, if only they hadn't cut the f/f relationship ):

For anyone curious, the book it's based on is even better, and has the full lesbian relationship in all its awesomeness :)

YES PLEASE.

I really wish they could do that with the same two leads. I adored them in those roles.
