now hang on. This sort of right-wing "Crusades were justified" nonsense is just as absurd as the opposite. Both sides were fighting over long contested territory. Both sides had slaves. Both sides committed horrible atrocities in the process. This was not "genocide of the Saracens" no, but it's not "righteous defense against evil" either.

But of course, the Christian literature and propaganda produced in the era, especially stuff by popes condoning the war and destruction of infidels (non-Christians) does outweigh that on the opposite side. The Church was absolutely nuts about the Crusades.
