....Well, that's interesting.

People have used "Crusaders" for way more innocent things than that since, though. Otherwise I would see your point.

I've seen people remark before that they'd probably raise some eyebrows if they were called the Junior Jihadists. Still, the Crusaders are so far back in time that people can get away with sanitizing them, like Vikings or the Shinsengumi. contrary to what other people in this thread might think, I'm actually not trolling. It DOES bother me. Like you say, Junior Jihadists? People would not think that's okay.
Even if we claim that the Crusaders were way back in history, I don't think it's good to erase the fact that Christianity has its own crazy religious-militant past, but even as a reference, it doesn't make sense!
They're not fighting to protect anything, they're not fighting FOR anything! They're searching for something!Conceptually, this should not be a 'crusade' anyway, even for the way 'crusade' is used in other contexts.
if they were called the "Cutie Mark Vikings" it would be stupid too. It's a nonsensical association.

The problem here, OP, is that you're a fucking idiot.

Crusading, crusaders, etc seeped into colloquial use a long, long, LONG time ago. That's what happens with language. Phrases get absorbed and sanitised. People say things like 'don't be such a grammar nazi' all the time and surely that history is far more recent and relevant to today than the fucking Crusades.

Just... get some perspective for gods sake.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-26 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno. When you think of the militaristic implications of the "boy scouts"...

op

(Anonymous) 2016-02-26 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
at least it's a less specific militaristic implication? And some of what they do is actual scouting, i.e. hanging around in forests and tying knots.
The ponies did not go on anything remotely resembling a military campaign or a holy war.

Re: op

(Anonymous) 2016-02-26 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
...do you know what a scout is? Scouts don't "hang around in forests and tie knots".

They picked 'crusaders' because it's alliteration you dumbfuck.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-26 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
They defend against Islamic expansionism and slavery.

Heroes tbqh

(Anonymous) 2016-02-26 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
now hang on. This sort of right-wing "Crusades were justified" nonsense is just as absurd as the opposite. Both sides were fighting over long contested territory. Both sides had slaves. Both sides committed horrible atrocities in the process. This was not "genocide of the Saracens" no, but it's not "righteous defense against evil" either.

But of course, the Christian literature and propaganda produced in the era, especially stuff by popes condoning the war and destruction of infidels (non-Christians) does outweigh that on the opposite side. The Church was absolutely nuts about the Crusades.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-26 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
well, the troll potential of this particular secret went from 0-100 REAL fuckin' quick.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-26 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
"Crusade" and "crusader" have become generic words, OP. No one except crazies would go "shit that word refers SPECIFICALLY to medieval period warfare!" Not to mention, the warfare in question was literally over five centuries ago, no one is affected by the "Crusades" today. (and they weren't called "crusades" back then, just fyi, that word came along later)

(Anonymous) 2016-02-26 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
it's a generic word for a vigorous campaign for political, social, or religious change (a definition that comes up second to the medieval period warfare).

so it still doesn't make sense.

Not to mention, the warfare in question was literally over five centuries ago,

No kidding. I think we should be hitting some kind of statute of limitations mark any day now.

On a sidenote, it's interesting to me how there are these conflicting stances in fandom about "language evolves and changes, and therefore I can use this word for what I want" vs "this word once meant this specific thing and therefore cannot or should not ever be used in any other context."

(Anonymous) 2016-02-26 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
lmao

ok, sure

(Anonymous) 2016-02-26 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
do you pitch a fit over superheroes being called 'caped crusaders' as well?

language changes. that word doesn't have that connotation to the VAST majority of people anymore.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-26 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
...and I want Bernie Sanders to abolish the term, and rerecord all the episodes while giving them some form of appropriate name *eyeroll*
You could answer that to every fucking secret on this community.

Looking up the etymology of the word, I think it's secretly a little clever.

An old definintion of crusade is the state of being marked [with the cross]. So a crusader is one seeking to be marked.

I get that this is the sort of word with a fair bit of baggage.

While searching one of my top search options for "crusade against" was followed by the word Islam.

However, it's also been used in other ways like The Crusade for Justice, a Mexican-American social movement and The Crusade for Citizenship, whose goal was to educate and register disenfranchised black voters.

I looked it up and got quest as a synonym. I think that's more what they're going for.
