Looking up the etymology of the word, I think it's secretly a little clever.

An old definintion of crusade is the state of being marked [with the cross]. So a crusader is one seeking to be marked.

I get that this is the sort of word with a fair bit of baggage.

While searching one of my top search options for "crusade against" was followed by the word Islam.

However, it's also been used in other ways like The Crusade for Justice, a Mexican-American social movement and The Crusade for Citizenship, whose goal was to educate and register disenfranchised black voters.
