that's because back in the day, before the time of modern medicine, women's lifespans tended to be much shorter than men's (because of childbirth and complications of childbirth) so it was common for older men, who could still reproduce, to seek out younger women. if she were closer to his own age, he would outlive her by a long shot in most cases.

arranged marriages were also more common in those days and women tended to be more dependent on men financially. an older man would probably be more financially stable than a younger one. so it made sense for them back then.
