It is a massively overrated show. I'm a stan for what other people call "grimdark" a lot of the time but it is mostly just jacking off to its own cynicism about humanity.

I completely disagree. It's an interesting SF/horror show in that it's only about one specific thing: the intersection of humanity with information/surveillance/media technology. It's particularly good that it's British, being as that country is rapidly becoming a total surveillance state, and it has a small, largely sealed celebrity ecosystem that can be easily studied, like an ant farm. They're further down the road toward the various futures depicted on the show, which makes Black Mirror, to me at least, look like advance reports from scouts that have been sent on ahead.

IA. I can see why people might find the cynicism a turnoff, but it's not entirely unwarranted, given the social context. I think the best thing about Black Mirror is that it's addressing a lot of points about the role media and technology play in our daily lives that most media does not.

This and the above comment really make me want to watch this...

Yeah, me too, and I don't generally go for TV.

+3 now I'm curious

I strongly recommend it. I think it's on Netflix, and there's not that many episodes so it's not a big time commitment.

I oughta just get Netflix...

*written by writers who only seem to access it from the super-deep standpoint of "What's going to happen when women can USE TECHNOLOGY to reject and cuckold us after we behave in disturbing ways?"

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT. I have no idea where you're getting this.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Probably from "The Entire History of You." That episode has an awful protagonist. And there's some shots like the writers want you to sympathize with him.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Holy SHIT you are bad at watching TV. How do you get through the day with that brain in your head? Do you fall down a lot?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Are you the RadFem anon everyone worries about?

Almost every episode has an EXCELLENT CONCEPT but with very little payoff other than people treating each other like shit in a way that doesn't advance the speculative element in any way.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
OP
This is what I got. They gloss over more of the interesting concepts to show their message.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 11:34 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree. It shows humans being human despite settings which would once have been scifi, which is rather the point. The dream of an enlightened society that has used its technical advancement to bring global equality and social harmony - that dream lies dead at our feet.

Despite our amazing new technology, humans are still the petty selfish animals they always were. That's the whole point of black mirror.

Agreed.

I love it. I get that it's not for everyone but it's not any more disturbing than reading the news tbh.

Do you actually live in Britain or know many people who do? I'm a native of over 50 years, and in no way is it "becoming an total surveillance state". As for celebrities, no-one is forced to care about them or be affected by them in any way.
