Can you elaborate on what was wrong with this show's portrayal of humanity? /has only seen a couple eps

It is a massively overrated show. I'm a stan for what other people call "grimdark" a lot of the time but it is mostly just jacking off to its own cynicism about humanity.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I completely disagree. It's an interesting SF/horror show in that it's only about one specific thing: the intersection of humanity with information/surveillance/media technology. It's particularly good that it's British, being as that country is rapidly becoming a total surveillance state, and it has a small, largely sealed celebrity ecosystem that can be easily studied, like an ant farm. They're further down the road toward the various futures depicted on the show, which makes Black Mirror, to me at least, look like advance reports from scouts that have been sent on ahead.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
IA. I can see why people might find the cynicism a turnoff, but it's not entirely unwarranted, given the social context. I think the best thing about Black Mirror is that it's addressing a lot of points about the role media and technology play in our daily lives that most media does not.

*written by writers who only seem to access it from the super-deep standpoint of "What's going to happen when women can USE TECHNOLOGY to reject and cuckold us after we behave in disturbing ways?"

Almost every episode has an EXCELLENT CONCEPT but with very little payoff other than people treating each other like shit in a way that doesn't advance the speculative element in any way.

Agreed.

I love it. I get that it's not for everyone but it's not any more disturbing than reading the news tbh.

That was a very graphic episode and it's no wonder that it's very polarizing, but if you came away thinking that the message is that people and technology are bad, then you've not really grasped the point at all, I'm afraid.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
What would you say the point is?

I'm not sure that counts as rape. It was his choice to do it.

"coercive rape" is a thing, anon

My sense of episode was that the *show* very much acknowledged that he was raped, and traumatized by it, even though none of the other characters really did. But yeah, it was hard to watch, and the non-DNA verification of the finger was super dumb. She could have still survived and been released with nine fingers, guys. It's not like the ~artist~ actually gave a shit about hurting people.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, matching DNA takes a while and they were on a time constraint.

"he was raped and it was never acknowledged"

Not true, though. The show definitely did not shy away from what a horrible, fucked up situation that was, and it showed you the aftermath both public and private. That was the point, in fact... that something ordinarily played for teh lulz (i.e. your PM fucking a pig) very quickly became an extremely unfunny, traumatic thing that people couldn't look away from even through it was awful to watch on many levels. The fact that people wanted to sweep it under the rug isn't lauded as the Right Thing to Do, it's shown you as another fucked up thing that happens in the aftermath of an event like that.

OP, you're well within your rights to like or dislike a show, but I think a lot of this series has gone over your head.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
OP
I know the show acknowledged how traumatized he was. None of the characters did. Nobody was outraged, they all just watched. Like zombies. Which was probably a point, but narratively it was just stupid.

See I think people say it's good because it did some stuff other show's didn't (and the writing is decent). I think the (none-too-great) portrayal of humanity is the entire point, though.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
i watched the first season and all i could think was the writers had a bad past relationship with a girlfriend and was suuuper hung up about it so it was a theme in like A TON of episodes.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
I watched a few episodes. I LOVED the one with the girl who was being watched and chased by people (that's not a spoiler!) but Black Mirror as a whole wasn't very impressive to me.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
I swear, that first episode is the best gatekeeper. With the exception of those who have rape trauma (I totally understand a person not being able to overcome a genuine trigger) I say if you can't get past it, you don't deserve Black Mirror. Yeah, that's a snobbish thing to say. I don't care.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 11:46 am (UTC)(link)
The clue is in the name 'Black Mirror'. It's a show whose main theme is holding up a mirror to the worst aspects of humanity and our relationship with technology. When it first came out, it was the only scifi out there even trying to examine this and not just relying on outdated scifi tropes from the sixties.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I couldn't get past that first episode. It left such a horrible feeling afterwards (for days!) that I just couldn't bring myself to watch any further episodes, even though I knew they weren't related (and heard they were better than the first one)

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh I'm with you, I thought that episode was sickening. His wife leaves him over it, too. That's like a woman being raped and her husband leaving her because she was raped. It was so disgusting and none of the other characters commented on it or showed any kind of sympathy. In real life, at least SOME people would say something about it, if not the majority.

The show as a whole just just over-cynical bullshit, like fapping over "how daaaaark can we get??" It crosses the border of realism into eye-rollingly juvenile horseshit.
