Equally important. Without the canon there would be no fanon. And the fanon can fill in gaps that canon doesn't.

+1 Same here. I love playing with and discussing both.

Plus, when canon is inconsistent or gets some aspect of a character or their past or whatever wrong, fanon can be a nice way to try and work around that inconsistency.
