Can't agree more, OP. I liked Kylo, I thought he was a great villain and has a lot of potential in the future movies. Of course I like poking fun at characters, so the emo Kylo jokes were funny at first... until I realized people were actually interpreting him as a whiny emo brat, which is not actually supported by anything in the movie. Now it's just annoying.

And as much as I loved that SNL skit I think it's just solidified that characterization for a lot of people.

How is he not a whiny emo brat?

He has a loving family and turned his back on them because he wants to be powerful. I'm not saying there won't be development later, but as of now, he's basically killed and tortured innocent people in his quest to be evil and purge himself of his love for his family.

idk, when emos were a thing around me they weren't killing and torturing innocent people in the quest to be evil and powerful, lol

maybe they were rejecting the love of their family... in a teenager sort of way.

I think he's called "emo" due to being extremely emotionally volatile and angsty, though.

Simply put, with TFA alone, I don't think that the description of Kylo Ren as a "whiny emo brat" misses the mark by that much. I like bratty, whiny characters though. But I do wish there was more sympathetic about him. Maybe in the subsequent films.

Emos are not known as being emotionally volatile. Angsty sure but Kylo isn't angsty in the emo sense.

What...do you think being whiny and emo means?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I think having second thoughts about the path his life has taken, when they are extreme as they are, are legit reason to "whine" though.

I don't agree. He has his parents offering him an out. And his problems are not at all sympathetic given that they basically boil down to "Why can't I be evil enough and as powerful as my grandfather?"

It's whining pure and simple. Like the son of a CEO complaining about the fact that he feels guilty over using slave labor and thus the company isn't as profitable. I just want to say, "Quit your whining, bitch."

I take it you're not a fan of the "Snoke groomed him through the Force from a young age" theory. In which case his problems boil down to something a little more complicated.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I don't mind it but, as of now, there's not a shred of evidence in the film that it is true. And so people who woobify him based on that mystify me. It may be that he joined Snoke because he was jealous that he wasn't the most powerful. We don't know. But I think people who sympathize with him based on the Snoke brainwashing Kylo theory are jumping the gun.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I think its partly the novelization, partly the fact that he turned to the Dark Side so young, and partly reading into things in the movie.

I think him being groomed by Snoke makes for more interesting drama than him simply desiring more power, because then it feels like we've gotten another Darth Maul (who I found to be an empty waste.) Plus, we've got Hux and Phasma for motivations like that already.

You're not wrong when you say its too early to tell, but I'd say the same is true for the "He's just a bad egg" theory too. And its not gonna be December 2017 for a long time.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
yeah i agree, i think people are painting him too flat and boring, i don't think he just craves power, i want to know what happened to him and why.
and frankly i like him!

He's not it's just a tempting joke to make since he has long hair and dresses in black. He's a very well constructed villain.
