Honestly, the 'kylo as mra neckbeard' whatever jokes are getting pretty old. He's not my favorite, but I definitely think he's more interesting than a lot of people give him credit for.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Same. And I mean, he's not really a teenager, he's probably in his twenties.
(Right?) So it's not really like our villain is some bratty teenager.

I have a theory that part of the reason he's so hated is because people view him as kind of being the embodiment of the culture of entitled white males that leads to all the American school shootings and whatnot. (Not saying I agree with this interpretation of him, but I've seen a lot of analysis of his characterization & motives couched in the sort of language that would imply this to be the case.)

And I think another huge part of the hate comes from backlash against the whole archetype of the moody villain with a tragic backstory that seems specifically designed to invoke woobification from the fandom. You know, like Loki.

Oh, in my case it's definitely just that scene. I can rationalize a lot of villainy, but not THAT.

Although I have definitely seen a huge number of pro-Kylo posts, so I don't think 90% of fandom hates him.

Nah, I like him cor the same reasons. I mean, he's definitely a bad guy, but even bad guys can be legit haunted, and I want to know more about that, whether it's metaphorical or literal.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just saying, if I'm meant to completely loathe the guy and not try to understand him at all their first big fuck-up was making him Han and Leia's kid and Luke's nephew and there's no turning back.

Also 90% of fandom doesn't seem to get that the dark side is a little more complicated than deciding to shoot up a school, and how that suffocatingly serious comparison takes a lot of fun out of sci-fi with magical forces governing good and evil.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Part of the problem is that there's really nothing (so far) sympathetic about Kylo's backstory. He was raised by two parents who love him, who are willing to forgive him after all the terrible things he's done. Han even lets Kylo kill him, even though Kylo's a significant threat (compare that to how Obi-Wan handled Anakin, for example).

But so far, we don't know why Kylo turned. Because he admired his shitty grandfather? That's not enough of a reason. We know he killed the young people in Luke's school, tortured people, ordered the slaughter of a village of people for no reason, and killed his loving father.

It's tragic for Han and Leia, sure, but at the moment, Kylo himself doesn't seem all that tragic because his angst stems from the fact that he can't be evil enough. Which isn't very relatable. And he doesn't have enough backstory yet to make it compelling.

This secret confuses me, because I thought people liked him. Or liked-to-hate, because yeah, he did (spoilers) and also murdered a lot of other innocents in backstory/passing. Or liked-to-hate because they've been to some of those dark places themselves and see the worst parts of themselves reflected in him, which honestly is what appeals to me. As a person, he's deplorable, but as a character, he's very well-written.

I don't have a problem with him per se, Just the trend he represents.

Why is it all the villains who should be interesting and darkly sexy are being played by skinny geeky looking white men with zero sex appeal, zero acting talent, zero gravitas or pathos? I'm looking at you Lex Luthor with your creepy face touching, I'm looking at you Joker with your whole thing, and I'm looking at you Kylo-Get-the-Gimp-ren?

I don't have strong opinions on him. I don't hate him, but I also don't find him a particularly unique villain. He definitely fills the role of what he's supposed to do just fine. The only thing about him that really interests me is his obsession with Vader - well, and the question of whether he'll be redeemed (I hope he's not for a few different reasons). The protags were definitely more interesting to me overall, in this movie.

I do think the emo!Kylo Ren stuff is funny though, sorry. (Granted I'm not on tumblr or anything and don't see it daily.)

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Can't agree more, OP. I liked Kylo, I thought he was a great villain and has a lot of potential in the future movies. Of course I like poking fun at characters, so the emo Kylo jokes were funny at first... until I realized people were actually interpreting him as a whiny emo brat, which is not actually supported by anything in the movie. Now it's just annoying.

And as much as I loved that SNL skit I think it's just solidified that characterization for a lot of people.

I didn't find him to be the most interesting character ever, but I didn't think he was the worst. And as morbid as it is, I actually enjoyed him as an example of how people can idolize terrible human beings, even if they've been taught to feel otherwise. Sometimes especially if they have been, out of some twisted form of rebellion.

I feel the same way. My friends and I came out of the cinema and one of the things we all agreed on was that Kylo Ren was a cool character. More fleshed out than SW villains of the past. Because people can complain about 'sympathetic' villains, but IMO if a movie these days had a villain as simply evil as Darth Vader in the first SW, people would scoff at it.

I too got the feeling that while Han and Leia loved him and did their best, they may not have always been very present in his life. That doesn't excuse anything he's done, but it could have helped to screw him up. Plus, how much pressure would he have been under? The (only?) child of two of the Rebellion's greatest heroes. The Last Jedi's nephew. In TFA he keeps talking about wanting power and needing to be strong, I'm willing to bet that's part of where that came from.

Finally, something that's in the tie-in novels but not the movie so I hope they do address it: Snoke's influence. Apparently he started watching and invading Ren's mind since he was three. Guiding his thoughts and his growth. If that's the case, Kylo Ren didn't have much more choice in the matter than your average Stormtrooper.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I love to hate him? Like what you're suppose to do with a villain.

I liked him in the sense that he was very much Anakin's grandson for me, and that he worked for the story.

I just think it's silly to get angry when people hate on a villain*. Sorry OP. He does stuff that 100% warrants hating.

(*Unless they're doing it in a way that's distinctly sexist, homophobic, etc. which does happen.)

90% of the fandom doesn't hate on him either. There's a huge, huge faction of Kylo Ren fans. They just tend to be a little separate.

I think people just assume that it would be awesome to be Han and Leia's kid and Luke's nephew, and that he has no "good" reason to be angry.

I don't have any strong opinions on him either way, he worked for me as the villain and I want to see where his story goes along with the other characters.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Most people make fun of him out of genuine love. I think he's the one people obsess the most about, as a stand alone character. Only a few disgruntled fanboys truly dislike him. Pretty sure he's gonna last for the next 2 movies at least, so I wouldn't worry about what other people do. He's also probably my favorite character. I check his tag the most since it has the best of everything in it.

I'm just basically 100% done with whiny villains (largely played by homely men) who get woobified to death by fandom. Snape, Loki, Kylo, they're all so generic at this point and I'd be happy if that archetype just went away forever.
