Honestly, I was sort of under the impression that Han and Leia messed up. Not that they were the worst parents ever, but they weren't overly emotionally engaged, and they didn't know how to handle his dark side (heh), so they passed him off to Luke. Which obviously was a mistake.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they were horrible people who abused him and he's a misunderstood Draco in Leather Pants - I think Han and Leia probably tried, and the ends most certainly didn't justify the means. But I have a feeling it was more complicated than Ben going from a happy-go-lucky pampered boy to teh evulz.

Yeah, but they clearly love him and are willing to die for him which doesn't suggest that they were bad parents. I mean, we can speculate that they "weren't overly emotionally engaged" but there's no evidence for that in the film and the rest of their behavior points to them loving him unconditionally and willing to sacrifice everything for him. Which doesn't at all suggest that they were bad parents.

Hence, it's difficult to find his situation sympathetic. At least, as of now. The sequels may alter this.

I have seen a lot of variations on that theory. I can't decide if I am too old to accept "it's his parents' fault" without a lot more evidence, or if it's just that I've been a fan of Han and Leia for nearly forty years so I am already on their side.

nayrt, but for me it's simply a matter of no evidence whatsoever, either from the film itself or from the original trilogy's characters' behavior to this point.
